Introduction Counselor can work in various settigs depending on their academic preperation, training, work experience, and specialization . Their roles and responsibilites vary depending on the setting or “workplace“ they are in and their specialization .

SCHOOL AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES

SCHOOL AND EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES Counselor also found in this area. School or guidance counselors help students deals with their personal and educational issues or concerns. This give rise to the more dynamic and complex role of school counselor.

EXAMPLE: For example, school counselors can help if a kid is: - bullied at school - new to the school and doesn't have friends yet - upset about a family problem, such as divorce or death of a loved one - having trouble with homework - having trouble with friends - feeling stressed

HUMAN RESOURCES DEPARTMENT

HUMAN RESOURCES (HR) DEPARTMENT Counselors can also work in a company’s human resources deparment. Career counselors can help employees make career choices and decisions. They can also conduct company activities or seminars that can improve the well-being and work outlook of employees.

For example, Amos graduated recently and applied for a job at Opus company. The Opus HR reviewed his resume, interviewed him, and eventually recruited him. Once he was hired and onboarded, Opus HR followed up by providing Amos with instructions detailing what was expected of him during his entire employment period. EXAMPLE:

PRIVATE CLINIC

PRIVATE CLINIC Counselors can also choose to have their own private clinic, where they can accept clients. In this work setting, counselors focus on individual or group appointments. Counselor can also perform family or couples counseling. In this case, they help couples resolve family and marital conflicts or issues.

EXAMPLE: For example, in individual counseling, counselors can help a client undergo a therapeutic process in order for the client to resolve personal issues, problems and concerns.

REHABILITATION AND TREATMENT CENTERS

REHABILITATION AND TREATMENT CENTERS In this work environment, counselors help clients suffering from physical and emotional disabilities. They help clients have a healthy family,work and social life.

EXAMPLE: For example, they may: -Help workers injured on the job -Assist veterans in achieving employment and independent living goals -Provide services for elderly people who develop health problems and/or need accommodations as they age -Assist people with people with disabilities

SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT FACILITIES

SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT FACILITIES In this setting , counselors help clients overcome different kinds of addictions, such as drugs or illegal substances, alcohol and gambling, among others.

EXAMPLE: For example, some addiction counseling clients may need to avoid social situations where other people might be using. Counselors may also need to help clients to identify and to mitigate possible relapse triggers, such as stress, depression and social isolation.

MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTIONS AND HOSPITALS

MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTIONS AND HOSPITALS In these work setting,counselors help individuals recover from mental and emotional disorders and issues, such as depression, anxiety, stress, trauma, and low self-esteem, among others.

EXAMPLE: Dr. Chen is a good therapist. He has helped me clarify perceptions that have blocked my growth and development. I have been able to resolve the feelings that have grown from the misperceptions. In counseling, I have learned new attitudes and language to help improve my marriage and family relationships. The barriers I have built up over the years are being removed. This process takes a long time, but I think it has moved at an appropriate pace. Other counselors have taken much longer to help me even begin the healing process. I have made great progress while working with Dr. Chen.

GOVERNMENT In this work setting, counselors can be found in the dfferent government agencies that offer counseling services such as social welfare, correctional institutions, state-run rehabilitation center, military, and police.

EXAMPLE: Savannah works in a non-profit-oriented/non-government organization that renders a variety of counseling services

PRIVATE SECTOR

PRIVATE SECTOR In this setting, counselors range from independent providers of services of work for NGOs or specialized for profit centers and organizations that render a variety of counseling services. In the industry sector, counselor can give personal counseling ,career counseling, and crisis counseling to employs who require these kinds of services.

EXAMPLE: For example, counselors who specialize in family counseling can put up a private clinic and accept couples and families who need their services.

COMMUNITY

COMMUNITY Counselor who are in the community deal with a wide range of clients, namely, children, adolescents, adults, families, and special groups such as women, poor, people with disabilities (PWD). The problems that they work with these clients can rang from mental health issues, career or employment concerns, trauma, addiction, and the like.

EXAMPLE: For example, consider a woman who comes to a counselor because she is experiencing symptoms of depression. While talking with the counselor, it’s revealed that the woman feels a low self-worth because she feels her employer dismisses many of her contributions for no reason. The woman feels this dismissal has also contributed to the denial of a pay raise she felt she deserved.
