TOURNAMENT ORGANIZATION: An Introduction

What is a Tournament? ⚫ Is a series of contests between a number of competitors, who compete for an over- all prize. (Google) ⚫ Is a competition for teams or single players in which a series of game is played, and the winners of each game play against each other until only one winner is left.

What is a League? ⚫ A league is a group of teams that play the same sport or activity against each other. (Collins dictionary) ⚫ an association of sports teams that organizes matches for its members. ⚫ an association of states or organizations or individuals for common action. (Princeton's WordNet)

The difference between a Tournament and Leagues Tournament is held in one (sometimes two) day(s). League is held over multiple weeks. Teams show up every week, play a few matches in a short 2- 3 hour timeframe, then go home.

What are the Factors to consider in Designing a Tournament?

1. Objectives of the Tournament Determine a winner quickly Provide for maximum participation Encourage social interaction Determine a true champion Emphasize the element of competition Increase skills in a particular sport Rank all entries according to ability

2. Characteristics of the Participants a. Age level – child, youth, adolescent, adult, or senior b. Sex – will the tournament be offered to Men, Women or Coed c. Playing ability – beginner, intermediate, or advance

3. Facilities, Equipment and Personnel requirements Policy for facility reservation Number of available facilities Adequate number of sports officials a. b. c. d. Funding for personnel

4. Time Parameters Length of time available to complete the tournament Specific dates, days, and hours available Provisions for inclement weather rescheduled games and championships play- offs, if applicable
