Transactional Leadership Transactional leadership revolves around a transaction between leader and follower. Leader is authoritative - commands what followers can do. Followers are rewarded for good behavior; punished for unwanted behavior. This motivates followers Expectations are clearly defined. Chain of command is clearly defined (Cherry, 2020a).

Transformational Leadership Transformational leadership revolves around breaking status quo. Leaders encourage change and the use of creativity. Genuinely want each member to succeed Strong vision for the group Motivates members and encourages participation through inspiration and communication. Revolves around four key elements: Intellectual stimulation Individualized consideration Inspirational motivation Idealized influence (Cherry, 2020a).

Transactional vs. Transformational Leadership Transactional Leadership Strict hierarchy structure Goal-oriented Motivates through reward/punishment system Reactive in nature Dictatorship in style Concerned with desired outcome Transformational Leadership Creative and nurturing structure Vision-oriented Motivates through inspiration and passion Proactive in nature Democratic in style Concerned with feelings and needs In both styles, there is a leader with followers, who share a purpose and work toward a common goal. (Michael, 2019).

Transactional Leadership in Education In education , this can be applied in the classroom by teachers The teacher sets expectations for students to follow. If the student does well and follows directions, they will be rewarded. If the student does not meet expectations, they will be punished In sports, this can be applied by coaches of an athletic team. Coaches establish clear rules and expectations. Players obey to be a part of the team. Players are rewarded by receiving playing time or winning games Players are punished by sitting out or losing games (Cherry, 2020a). (Khan, 2017).

Transformational Leadership in Education In education, this can be applied by the school counselor. The counselor takes a personal interest in each individual student. The counselor is passionate about inspiring students & encourages creativity The students respect the counselor and want to follow directions. The students feel motivated to succeed due to nurturing environment In education, this can also be applied by administrators. The administrator allows for teachers to practice autonomy in the classroom The administrator promotes positive school climate and community The teachers well-being is positively affected by the administrators techniques.
