The learners should be able to:     Know and understand the purpose of transactional writing. List and explain different types of letters in transactional writing. Differentiate between a formal and an informal letter. Write a formal and an informal letter.

Transactional writing - has a practical, communicative purpose as opposed to writing that is purely creative . It includes Letters, reports, diary entries, dialogues, reviews and minutes of meetings. Each of these has its own format and follows a specific set of rules.

Friendly/informal letter it provides you with a vehicle to inform, invite, congratulate or offer condolences . The tone is friendly, conversational , informal and above all sincere. You can use contractions e.g I’m and we’re .

Features of an informal letter No punctuation is used for the address The address of the recipient is not written. Leave a line below the address. The salutation is written on the line immediately below the date next to the margin. Write the introductory paragraph.

Continuation… Leave a line then write the body of the letter which states the reason in detail. Aa least two paragraphs. The conclusion is usually short and rounds of the letter.

EXAMPLE OF AN INFORMAL LETTER

THE FORMAL LETTER The sender’s address and date are written in the middle on the right-hand side of the page Leave a line between the first and second address. Write the name of the recipient against the left margin before writing their address. Do not use punctuations for the address.

CONTINUATION… Leave a line again between the two. If you do not know the person you are writing to use ‘Sir’ or ‘Madam’ you then write an underlined subject heading under the salutation if it is not written in capital letters. after leaving a line you then write the introductory paragraph which extends the reason of the letter written on the subject heading.

CONTINUATION… Now we come to the end of the letter. With a formal letter yours faithfully is the most used ending.
