How bad are SF earthquakes? San Francisco sits on the Ring of Fire, an area within the pacific where many earthquakes happen. Earthquakes happen on the coast of California almost every other day, and it doesn’t help that one of the biggest cities in america is prone to these natural disasters. However, the Transamerica pyramid was built with these earthquakes in mind, and the building has remained undamaged since its inception.
What is the transamerica pyramid? The Transamerica Pyramid is a skyscraper in San Francisco, California. It was once the tallest building in San Francisco until it was replaced by the Salesforce Tower in 2018. The building is notable for its earthquake resistance, being built in a city with many earthquakes. The building has a wide base, concrete and steel foundations, exterior reinforcement, and a truss system at the base of the building.
How has the pyramid lasted through history? The pyramid has gone through billions of dollars of renovation in recent years, and this is necessary to catch up with modern office building standards. The pyramid has recently been subject to a $250 million renovation, and has been open to the public while the renovation takes place. The building’s earthquake resistance is primarily due to the base, which is built out of strong reinforced concrete that widens out the building. The earthquakes that have shook this building failed to knock it down because of the base structure.
