DEFINITION- Transdermal drug delivery is one of the system lying under the category of control drug delivery in which the drug is deliver to the skin at a predetermined & control rate.. Type of transdermal drug delivery system- Transdermal patch Transdermal film Transdermal gel

TRANSDERMAL PATCH- It is a medicated adhesive patch that is placed on the skin to deliver a specific dose of medication through the skin into the bloodstream. .

Advantages of patches- 1.Topical patches are a painless ,non invasive way to deliver substances directly into the body. 2.Topical patches are cost effective. 3.Topical patches over a controlled ,steady delivery of medication over long periods of time . 4.Dose delivery unaffected by vomiting & diarrhoea . 5.Avoid the first pass hepatic metabolism & 6.enzymetic degradation by the gastro intestinal track. 7.Less frequent dosing improve the patient compliance. 8.Drug administration stop with patch remove.

DISADVANTAGES OF PATCHES- Transdermal drug delivery system can not deliver ionic drugs. Drug molecule must be potent. Only small lypophilic drug can deliver to the skin. Adhesion may be vary with patch type & environmental condition

Condition in which transdermal patches are used- 1. W hen the patient has intolerable side effects and who is unable to take oral medication ( dysphagia )and is requesting an alternative method of drug delivery. 2 .Where the pain control might be improved by reliable administration. This might be useful in patient with congestive impairment or those who for other reasons are not able to self medicate with their analgesia .

Condition in which transdermal patches are not used- The use of transdermal patch is not suitable when- 1.cure for acute pain is required. 2.where rapid dose titration is required. 3.where requirement of dose is equal to or less than 30mg/24hrs.

Types of transdermal patches- Single- Layer Drug in Adhesive. Multi- Layer Drug in Adhesive. Reservoir Type. Matrix Type.
