TRIBES-introduction A tribe is a group of people who live and work together in a shared geographical area. A tribe has a common culture, dialect and religion. A tribal society is a group of tribes organized around kins hips .
TRIBES-introduction Humans lived in tribes before they started living cities and nations. There are still tribal groups all over the world. Their numbers are getting smaller and smaller.
Tribes of Chhattisgarh About one-third of Chhattisgarh’s population is tribal. The State has a total of forty two Scheduled Tribes and all have been enumerated at 2001 census. As many as 94.7 per cent of ST population resides in rural areas. The main tribes among them are Gonds of Bastar, Abhuj Maria, Bison Horn Maria, Murias, Halba, Bhatra and Dhurva.
Gonds of bastar Gonds are the oldest and one of the populous tribe of Chhattisgarh. Their name is derived from the Telugu connotation "Kond" meaning hill. They are also known as Koytorias.
Gonds of bastar Their economy mostly depend on agriculture. Some of the Gond people are however employed in cushy primary sector jobs as well as other allied industries. The remaining people depend on hunting and fisheries.
Abhuj maria The Abhuj Maria race of tribal individuals are one of the foremost sub ranks of the Gond tribals. They live in isolation and inhabit the secluded enclaves of Narayanpur tehsil of Bastar District. They are known as hill Marias.
Abhuj maria They are mainly semi-nomadic farmers practicing shifting cultivation method of agriculture. They protect tigers from poachers, which is highly honored . They still follow their age old practice of livelihood.
Bison horn maria Bison Horn Maria is one of the famous tribal groups of India. The Bison Horn Maria are known for their love of landa, a rice beer. Landa is drunk at all festivals and special occasions.
Bison horn maria Mostly found in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar Region. This tribal community of Chhattisgarh derived their name from their unique custom of wearing a distinctive headdress, which resembles the horns of a wild bison.
Murias The Murias are one of the innumerable tribes who inhabit Chhattisgarh. The Muria tribesmen principally live in the thick woodland zones of Narayanpur Tehsil and Kondagon Tehsil of Bastar District, the home of larger part of the tribals.
Murias They are a prominent sub caste of Gonds who dominate the populace of Chhattisgarh. They cultivate rice in plenty. Some Muria tribals also depend up on collecting forest products.
halba The Halba tribe is a popular tribe who have happily settled in the bucolic lands of Chhattisgarh. The word ‘hal’ in their name locally means ploughing or farming. But nowadays they are involved in a myriad of professions of their choice.
halba The Halbas are probably the most affluent and progressive people. They also enjoy the privileged status of a high local caste and hence are deeply revered in the tribal society. The unique individuality of the Halbas is evinced by their apparels, dialects and traditional customs.
Bhatra They are very similar to Gond tribe and are largely settled in Bastar district and the southern part of Raipur District in Chhattisgarh. The term Bhatra literally means a servant.
Bhatra They eat rice as a cereal. Mostly, Bhatra tribes are employed as village watchmen, domestic servants and village priests. In the Bhatra community, outsiders are generally not admitted.
Dhurva They inhabit the eastern part of Bastar and Sukma districts in Chhattisgarh. They still speak their traditional language. They are highly religious and pious and worship several local cult gods and goddesses.
Dhurva The Dhurvas depend upon agriculture for their economic subsistence. The tribal people are also talented craftsmen whose expertise is exquisite handicrafts that they make out of cane and other forest products.
