Two Factor Theory By Hamna Rafique Neha gul

Proposed by: Two-Factor Theory, formulated by Frederick Herzberg , which holds that employee job satisfaction and job dissatisfaction are influenced by separate factors in 1968.

Framework

Explanation Two Factor Theory States that there are certain factors in workplace that cause Job Satisfaction and Dis-satisfaction . It also States a concept that affects individual satisfaction and motivation level.

Example Dissatisfaction Satisfaction

Factors :

Combinations High Hygiene + High Motivation High Hygiene + Low Motivation Low Hygiene + High Motivation Low Hygiene + Low Motivation

Stimulus Improving the motivator factors increases job satisfaction. Improving the hygiene factor decreases job dissatisfaction. This theory identifies such characteristics of jobs that are related to job satisfaction, while a different set of job factors lead to dissatisfaction. Herzberg’s research found that motivator factors are far more effective in motivating employee productivity .

Applications 1. Remove the Hygiene Factors first 2. Focus on motivational factors and job enrichment to improve work quality 3. Talk to employees and team members 4. Provide stimulating and rewarding work so that employees are motivated to work perform better 5. Be an example 6. Give voice to Employees

Criticism The factors considered were narrow in scope . The overall methodology of the theory was questioned. Herzberg assumed that satisfaction is connected to productivity. The theory was inconsistent in nature . Theory ignores blue collar workers
