What is a Claim? An assertion open to challenge. It is the assertion or proposition that the individual is trying to prove or persuade others to accept. Claims are statements that require evidence or reasoning to support them.

Examples: Yoga provides both physical and mental health benefits. People who get at least 10,000 steps per day are healthier than those who don’t. Eating too many carbohydrates is the primary reason some people are overweight.

Characteristics of a good claim: A good claim should be argumentative and debatable. A claim should be specific and focused. A claim should be interesting and engaging. A claim should be logical.

Types of Claim Claims of fact Claims of value Claims of policy In expressing your thoughts or arguments towards an issue, there are three types of claims you can use.

Claim of Fact It asserts that a condition existed, exist and are based on facts or data. Inferences made are based on data, documents, scientific observations and research. A claim whether something is true or untrue but there, must always be potential for controversy, conflict, or change.

Questions to answer if a claim is a CLAIM of FACT: Did it happen ? Does it exist ? Can we investigate it through research or interviews ? Eating too many carbohydrates is the primary reason some people are overweight.

Taking a hot bath after going out will wash out all the bacteria and virus you may have gathered from your travels. Teens who engage in unprotected sex will develop STDs, become pregnant, and/or contract AIDS. Examples

Claim of Policy Statements that argue that something needs to be done. May it be making a law or calling for action. Usually has modals should, must and ought to.

Questions to answer if a claim is a CLAIM of POLICY: Does it ask for plan of action ? Does it solve a certain problem or issue ? What should be done ? Marijuana should not be legalized because many individuals will abuse it.

Legislation must be passed to stop the sale of cigarettes. Children under the age of 12 should not be allowed to have social media profiles. Examples

Claim of Value Claims of value are focused on relative judgement made based on morals, standards, and norms. It expresses approval or disapproval about something andattempts to show that something is wrong or right. It is based on likes or dislikes/good or bad.

Questions to answer if a claim is a CLAIM of VALUE: Which ones are more important, and why ? ? Is it good or bad ? Abortion is immoral.

Animal testing is the worst way to check medical products. Capital punishment is unjust. Examples
