Educational Guidance

Educational Guidance It deals with educational problems head the needs of students‘ problems head the needs of students‘ problems. Related to every aspect of education school/ colleges, curriculum, methods of instruction & other curriculum of instruction & other curricular activities, disciplines etc . It is the assistance given to the individual :- to understand his/her potentialities have a clear cut idea of the different educational opportunities and their educational opportunities and their requirements to make wise choices as regards to school, college : course, curricular & extra curricular activities

Definitions of E ducational Guidance According to Brewer , educational guidance is a conscious effort to assist in the intellectual growth of an individual. Jones defines educational guidance as the assistance given to the pupils in their choices and adjustment s with relation to school, curriculum, courses and school life.

Objectives of educational guidance To assist the pupil to understand him/herself i.e . to understand his/her potentialities, strength limitations. To help the child make educational plans consist with his/her abilities, interests and goals To enable the student to know detail about the subject and courses offered. To assist the student in making satisfactory progress in various school/ college subjects . To help the child to adjust with the schools, its rules, regulations, social life connected with it. To help the child in developing good study habits. To help the child to participate in out of class educational activities in which he can develop leadership and other social qualities.

Aims of Educational guidance Help to ensure that choice of education and career will be of greatest possible, Be targeted particularly at young people with special needs for guidance in relation to choice of education, training and career ; Take into account the individual’s interests and personal qualifications and skills , including informal competencies, previous education, work experience, as well as the expected need for skilled labour and self-employed businessmen ; Contribute to limiting, as much as possible, the number of dropouts and students changing from one education and training programme to another ; Contribute to improving the individual’s ability to seek and use information , including IT-based information and guidance, about choice of education , educational institution and career ; The last objective is to raise the quality level guidance, including an improvement in counsellors’ qualifications and competencies

Stages of Educational Guidance

Elementary Stage At the elementary stage guidance programme must, Help the children to make good beginning, to plan intelligently, To get the best out of their education and prepare them for secondary schools. Educational guidance needs to be used in diagnosing difficulties, in identifying the special needs of children.

Secondary Stage At the secondary stage educational guidance should help the pupils To understand themselves better, To understand different aspects of the school, To select appropriate courses To get information about different educational opportunities, To develop good study habits. The students should be helped to be acquainted with the vocational implications of various school subjects.

Tertiary Stage Educational guidance at the tertiary stages must Oriented students about purpose and scope of higher studies and Helps them to stimulate their studies. Each college/ university must have a guidance unit with due provision of guidance services.

Vocational Guidance

Vocational guidance A process of assisting the individual to choose an occupation , prepare for it, enter upon it and progress in it . Concerned primarily with helping individuals make decisions and choices involved in planning a future and building a career . The purpose behind assisting the youth to choose, prepare, enter and progress in vocation is the optimum growth of the individual . Interpersonal process developed to assist individuals with career problems development problems Other names to it are :- 1 . Vocational guidance 2 . Occupational counselling 3 . Vocational counselling

Definitions - Vocational guidance According to Super , vocational guidance is the process of helping the individual to adjust in occupations, to make effective use of human power and to facilities the economic development of the society. International Labour Organisation (ILO) defines vocational guidance as assistance given to an individual in solving problems related to occupational choice and progress with due regard for the individual’s characteristics and their related to occupational opportunity.

Objectives of Vocational Guidance To assist students to acquire knowledge of the characteristics, functions, duty requirements of occupations in which they are interested. Personal Guidance

Personal Guidance Personal guidance is an assistance given to students to solve their emotional problem and to help them control their emotions and feelings. It is an assistance given to an individual towards a better adjustment in development of attitude and behavior in all areas of life. It assists the child to adjust well with physical and social environment and to solve all the emotional and psychological problems.

Definition - Personal Guidance According to Wilson , personal guidance is the assistance given to an individual in his physical, emotional, social, moral and spiritual development and adjustment. Strang defines guidance as the assistance given to an individual to solve his personal problems, such as social and emotional adjustment, economic and social relationships and problems connected with his physical as well as mental health.

Group Guidance

Group Guidance Group guidance is considered to be an approach aimed at providing helpful personal, educational, or occupational information to groups of individuals. It occurs in a group setting in which one or more guidance workers encounter students as a group . It involves guiding the individual in group situations.

Definitions of Group Guidance Jones , group guidance is any group activity in which the primary purpose is to assist each individual in the group to solve his problems and to make his adjustments. Crow and Crow consider group guidance as a guidance service that is made available by school personnel to large or small group of pupils.
