TYPES OF
LEAVES:
BY NI DA F AT I MA
There are two types of leaves
Simple leaf
Compound leaf
1) Simple Leaf: A simple leaf is one in which lamina is all in
one piece. The margin of the leaf are sometimes incised to a
greater or lesser extent as found in Peepal, mulberry.
2) Compound Leaf: A compound leaf is one in which the
lamina is divided into a number of separate leaf-like parts
called leaflets. Leaflets may arise from one point or are borne
on a common stalk or Rachis.
Compound Leafhas following kinds;
a)Pinnate compound leaf: When the leaflets of the
compound leaf arise from the sides of rachis the
compound leaf is said to be Pinnate Compound leaf, e.g.,
Leaf of Rose.
b)Palmate compound leaf: When the leaflets of a
compound leaf comes of from one point at the tip of the
petiole, the leaf is said to be a Palmate compound leaf.
Peripinnate: When there is even number of leaflets, as in Cassia
fistula.
Imperipinnate:When there is also a terminal leaflet as in Rose ,
so the number of leaf is odd , as in Rose .
Bipinnate: If the leaflets of a pinnate compound leaf are
themselves pinnately divided into smaller leaflets or Piuules, the
leaf is said to be Bipinnate, as in Acacia, Albizzia.
Tripinnate: If the pinnulesare again pinnately divided into
leaflets of third order , as in Meliaazedarach .
Unifoliate: If in a palmate compound leaf there is a single leaf let the leaf is said
to be Unifoliate.
Bifoliateor Binate: If two leaflets are present the leaf is said to be Bifoliate.
Trifoliate of Ternate: If three leaflets are present in the leaf it is said to be
Trifoliate.
Multifoliate:If many leaflets are present at the tip of the petiole it is said to be
Multifoliate.
Biternate: If each leaflet of a trifoliate leaf it self ternate , the whole leaf is called
Biternate.
Digitate: A palmate compound leaf having 5 to 7 leaflets is often describe as
digitate
