ABSTRACT NOUN CONCRETE NOUN

Abstract Noun : A noun denoting an idea, action, quality or state of being that cannot be seen or experienced. Examples : thought - idea beauty - state of being kindness - quality laughter - action We cannot see, hear, touch, taste or smell these concepts. It can only be thought or felt . Example : happiness - feeling

List of abstract nouns : liberty love anger danger happiness freedom truth health generosity birth charity fear beauty knowledge democracy bravery pain childhood

PRACTICE EXERCISE : Identify abstract nouns from the following sentences :

Childhood memories are sources of great joy. childhood, memories and joy - abstract nouns. Alex had a fear that he would fall down. fear - abstract noun.

Abstract nouns can be formed from adjectives, verbs and common nouns. From adjectives From verbs From common nouns Kindness from kind Obedience from obey Childhood from child Bravery from brave Growth from grow Slavery from slave Honest from honest Pleasure from please Lawyer from law

Rules of abstract nouns: Abstract nouns are formed by adding suffixes . Eg : dry + ness = dryness mother + hood = motherhood Some abstract nouns end in - -y, -ty, or -ity Joy, beauty, responsibility.

3. Some abstract nouns end in - -ion, -tion, or -ation Collection, destruction, admiration.

Concrete noun : A noun denoting a material object . It can be identified through one of the five senses ie touch, taste, hearing, smell or sight. They are opposite to abstract nouns. They are specific and observable facts . Examples : mountain - can be seen, incense sticks - can be smelled, trumpet - can be heard, noodles - can be tasted, rain - can be touched.

Collective Nouns Names given to groups of people, animal or thing. Eg : team, herd, audience, flock, family Collective nouns have singular and plural meaning. When referring to a group as a unit, the noun is singular and takes a singular verb. Eg : The team works on its plays. When referring to the individual members of the group, the noun is plural and takes a plural verb. Eg : The team go to their individual lockers.
