3. DIGITAL THERMOMETERS WHAT ARE DIGITAL THERMOMETERS? Digital thermometers are temperature-sensing instruments that are easily portable, have permanent probes, and a convenient digital display. The way a digital thermometer works depends upon its type of sensor. Sensor types include resistance temperature detector (RTD), thermocouple and thermistor. 3

5. INFRAFRED THERMOMETERS WHAT ARE INFRAFRED THERMOMETERS? An infrared thermometer is a  thermometer  which infers temperature from a portion of the  thermal radiation  sometimes called  black-body radiation  emitted by the object being measured. They are sometimes called laser thermometers as a  laser  is used to help aim the thermometer, or non-contact thermometers or temperature guns, to describe the device's ability to measure temperature from a distance. By knowing the amount of  infrared  energy emitted by the object and its  emissivity , the object's temperature can often be determined within a certain range of its actual temperature. Infrared thermometers are a subset of devices known as "thermal radiation thermometers“. 5

A liquid crystal thermometer, temperature strip or plastic strip thermometer is a type of thermometer that contains heat-sensitive (thermochromic) liquid crystals in a plastic strip that change colour to indicate different temperatures. The resolution of liquid crystal sensors is in the 0.1°C range. 6

Most made in the 20th century are mercury-in-glass thermometers. They are accurate and sensitive, having a narrow place where the mercury level rises very fast. A kink in the tube stops the mercury level from falling on its own. 8
