About Ujjain Ujjain has great historical and religious significance and features as an ancient seat of learning in the sacred Hindu texts. For those who are keen on retracing the footprints of Hindu mythology, Ujjain is a must visit with its multitude of grand temples. Among the thousands of Shiva temples, 84 specific temples and supposed to hold particular significance, especially in the month of Shravan.

Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga and Temple is the most important temple in Ujjain. The Jyotirling here is Dakshinamurti Swayambhu “self manifested” which derives power within itself unlike others where lingas are installed.

Harsiddhi Mata Temple Just around 350 m away from Mahakaleshwar Temple and across the Rudra Sagar Lake, is the Harsiddhi Mata Temple, another important landmark of Ujjain. It is one of the 51 major Shakti Peethas of India.

Bade Ganeshji ka Mandir True to its name, the Bade Ganeshji ka Mandir houses one of the largest statues of Lord Ganesha in the country. The temple is situated on the opposite side of Mahakaleshwar Dharamshala near the Mahakaleshwar Temple.

Religion and Language Being a famous Hindu pilgrimage destination, a majority of Hindu population dominates the city of Ujjain . However, a small ratio of people belonging to other religions also lives there. The main language of the city is Hindi and English.

Fairs and Festivals The culture of Ujjain is best reflected its fairs and festivals that take place here in a colorful manner. The biggest fair here is the Maha Kumbh Mela which is held after 12 years. It is a great bath festival of the town and gathers millions of people all across the country and abroad at the banks of River Shipra in Ujjain.

Food Though there is nothing to be so special in the cuisine of Ujjain but street food is very common among the tourists. While taking a tour to the various religious places and other attraction in the city, the visitors should try the locally made snacks, chats, pani puri, bhel puri etc from the street markets.

Best Season Ujjain experiences tropical kind of climate with hot summers and cold winters. The best time to visit the city is from October to March. Summer in Ujjain lasts from March to June and the city experiences harsh climate. The heat is very scorching and the temperature extends up to 48 degree C in summers associated with hot winds called as loo.

Demographics According to the 2011 census, Ujjain has a population of 515,215; 264,871 of whom were male and 250,344 female. The sex ratio is 945 per 1000 males, and the child sex ratio is 929 girls per 1000 boys. The city has 58,972 children under the age of six. Ujjain's population is 77% Hindu, 19% Muslim and 2.5% Jain.
