INTRODUCTION The volcano rumbles and its smoke rises to the sky. The priests slowly climb the long slope, chanting as they pass. Upon reaching the shore, smoke spreads and molten lava is thrown into the air. A few men come forward bringing a tied woman. His eyes gleam with fear, but he offers no resistance. Men bring her to where the priests are offering prayers to their gods. They ask for good harvests, that their gods are no longer angry and that they accept this sacrifice as a peace offering for their sins. When the prayer ends, the priests lift the young woman over their heads and throw her into the mouth of the fiery volcano. What a dreadful story!
INTRODUCTION However, throughout history humanity has felt the need to offer sacrifices. The Bible records that even in ancient Israel lambs and other animals were slaughtered as part of their religious observance. Why slaughter animals? 1. It provided a graphic lesson that sin causes death. 2. It gave hope to know that a substitute would die for sinners.
Why did the practice of sacrificing animals become a middlemost part of the worship of the true God? The Bible gives us two reasons: First, God wanted the Israelites to understand that "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23). Second , God wanted them (and we ) to know that we don't have to die for our sins . 1. When we rebel and sin against God , we lose the right to life . Every time an Israelite sinned , he would bring an animal, usually a lamb , to the sanctuary where his life was taken from him . 2. It was a graphic lesson that sin causes death . A substitute would die in our place
Ellen G. White The sacrifice demanded for their transgression revealed to Adam and Eve the sacredness of God's law ; and they understood better than ever the guilt of sin and its horrific results ... A system was then established that required the sacrifice of animals , in order to keep before fallen man what the serpent had made Eve not believe , that the payment of the disobedience is death . CHRIST IN HIS SANCTUARY. P. 26
Now , when Jesus began His ministry , He came to the Jordan River to be baptized . When John the Baptist saw Jesus , he said , " Behold the Lamb of God , who takes away the sin of the world !" (John 1:29). John called Jesus "Lamb of God " because Jesus would suffer and die to save us from the results of our sins , which is eternal death !
Ellen G. White For Adam the offering of the first sacrifice was a very painful ceremony . He had to raise his hand to take a life that only God could give . . . As he killed the innocent victim , he trembled at the thought that his sin would cause the blood of the immaculate Lamb of God to be shed . And he was amazed at the infinite kindness that such a ransom gave to save the guilty . PATRIARKS AND PROPHETS. P. 54, 55.
The Bible S ays : "He who knew no sin, he made sin for us , that we might become the righteousness of God in him " (2 Corinthians 5:21). Each sacrificial animal was a symbol of Jesus . God was showing His people that one day the true Lamb of God would die in their place. That was God's plan from the beginning . "And all the inhabitants of the earth worshiped her whose names were not written in the book of life of the Lamb who was slain from the beginning of the world " (Rev. 13: 8).
The Bible not only tells us that Jesus would die for our sins , but through prophecy , it also tells us when he would die! It all started when the prophet Daniel prayed one day for Jerusalem , destroyed years before by the Babylonians . As Daniel prayed , the angel Gabriel appeared to him and gave him a time- centered prophecy : " Seventy weeks are determined on your people and on your holy city ..." Gabriel told Daniel (Daniel 9:24). Simply put , Daniel was told that in 70 ( Seventieth ) weeks something would happen to the Jews and their city , Jerusalem . Now , 70 ( Seventieth ) weeks is just a little bit longer than a year , 490 ( F our hundred and ninety ) days . But in Bible prophecy one day represents one year ( Num . 14:34; Ezek . 4: 6).
The Bible not only tells us that Jesus would die for our sins , but through prophecy , it also tells us when he would die! So God told Daniel that something significant was going to happen in 490 years . 490 years since when ? The Bible also tells us this : “ Know , then , and understand , that from the issuance of the order to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there will be seven weeks , and sixty-two weeks ” or 69 ( sixty-nine ) weeks (Daniel 9:25). So from the order to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until “ Messiah the Prince”, there would be a period of 69 weeks . (69 weeks equals 483 days / years ). According to Ezra 7:13, the decree to restore and rebuild was given in 457 BC. If you add 483 years to 457 B.C., you take it to A.D. 27, the same year that Jesus was anointed (the meaning of Messiah is “ anointed ”) by the Holy Spirit at his baptism in the Jordan. Isn't it amazing ?
The Bible not only tells us that Jesus would die for our sins , but through prophecy , it also tells us when he would die! Now , remember that after the 69-week period , the Messiah will “be killed , but not for himself ” (Daniel 9:26). This means that Jesus would die shortly after AD 27. But more importantly , He would not just “die”, He would be sacrificed for you and me. The Bible says it this way : " But God shows his love for us , in that , while we were still sinners , Christ died for us " ( Romans 5: 8). But the prophecy says even more. So far we have covered 69 of the 70 weeks . We still have one more week to go .
The Bible not only tells us that Jesus would die for our sins , but through prophecy , it also tells us when he would die! The prophecy continues ( Remember this was written more than 500 years before the events !): “And for another week he will sign the covenant with many ; in the middle of the week he will stop the sacrifice and the offering ”(Daniel 9:27). After three and a half years Christ , the true Lamb would be sacrificed , nullifying the need to continue the sacrifice of animals . That's what happened . In the spring of AD 31, “ our Passover which is Christ was sacrificed for us ” (1 Cor. 5: 7). When Stephen was stoned to death (AD 34), three and a half years after Jesus ' death on the cross , the Gospel began to spread throughout the world ( Acts 8: 4). This put an end to the amazing prophecy about Jesus and the proclamation of the Gospel from Jerusalem to the whole world .
MESSAGE TO REMEMBER In this amazing prophecy , God lets us know that we can trust Him and His Word. God sent his son Jesus Christ to die for you and me at an appointed time, and Jesus was sacrificed exactly as indicated . God told us that a substitute would come to die for our sins , and He also told us when . Jesus fulfilled the prophecy perfectly . Now we , who live hundreds of years after these prophecies , can look back in history and see that God is undoubtedly faithful to His words . He is a wonderful God , and we have a wonderful Savior !
Ellen G. White The sinner can become a child of God , an heir to heaven . He can rise from the dust and remain clothed in the garment of light. . . With each step you take , you see new beauties in Christ , and you become more and more like him in character . – SELECT MESSAGE 20.
