Prescription vs Description Prescriptivists Linguists Strong delineation between what is correct and what is not If language changes, if ‘rules’ are broken, the heart of language will be torn out Changes are an inherent feature of language and very interesting Changes are systematic, consistent with the building codes of that language What do people do with language?
Some Prescriptive Rules Split infinitives “to boldly go” (split) vs “to go boldly” (infinitive together) . Preposition ending “Where are you going to?” (ending with a preposition) vs “To where are you going?” (formal, no preposition at the end of the sentence) Double negative “I don’t have no money” vs “I don’t have any money”
