Methods of Science, Lesson 1: Understanding Science By: Rasha Shawky
-A Scientist : asks questions about the natural world . - There are many kinds of scientists and many questions to ask. - Scientists can work alone or in teams. - Science : is the study of the natural world . - Branches of Science: Earth science : the study of things like rocks, soils, oceans and the atmosphere. Physical science : the study of matter and energy. It includes both Physics and Chemistry. Life science : the study of living things.
Scientific Inquiry : -When Scientists use their skills to investigate (answer questions) about the natural world. - Scientists investigate in many ways, one of them is the Scientific Method .
Scientific Method
A B Two brothers , Wesley & Grayson planted the same kind of plant . They watered them every day with the same amount of water . The two plants were well aerated .
After several days ; Grayson Wesley After observing the two plants , they found that both plants were watered with the same amount of water everyday & were well aerated.
Observation : is the information collected by using the five senses .
I hypothesize that sunlight is important for plant growth Grayson asked his brother a question ; “Why did the plant under the bed wilt ? ”
Hypothesis Hypothesis : is an idea or explanation that can be tested with an investigation. Example: ‘’ I hypothesize that sunlight is important for plant growth’’.
Grayson and Wesley wanted to make sure from Grayson’s hypothesis , so they decided to plan and conduct an experiment.
what is the factor that is changed in this experiment ? The factor that you change in an experiment is called a ……… Sunlight To “Vary” means to “Change” It is important to change only one factor at a time in your experiment Variable
An Experiment : is a fair test. It can show that one thing causes another thing to happen. You conduct the experiment multiple times to make sure it is accurate. In each test, I change only one Factor ( Variable ) to be a fair test.
After record their results , They concluded that” sunlight is important for their plants to live “. They watered the two plants with the same amount of water every day , but after 3 days; Did the results support Wesley’s hypothesis ?
Co llect and Record Data (results): You can use words, numbers or drawings. Now you have evidence, so you can draw conclusion. Evidence : facts or data gained from observations and experiments. Draw conclusion : Conclusion : is an explanation based on Evidence.
Step 7: Communicate: (Share results)
Scientific investigations use scientific methods: 1) Make observations 2) Ask a question 3) Form a hypothesis 4) Plan and Conduct an experiment 5) Record and Analyze results 6) Draw conclusions 7) Communicate results
