7. Sex and Gender: Sex: Sex is the biological differences between female and male, at a basic level. Human beings are either born as male or female for the most part, although there is a very small segment of babies that present a mixed anatomical distribution. 8. Gender: Unlike sex, gender is socially constructed . Social structures such as family, society and other socio-cultural practices determine differences based on the sex of the child. The differences include clothing, behaviour, social role, position, identity and responsibility. In this way, gender is constructed and practiced. What should be your job? Should you be a receptionist? What should be your hobbies? Should you go rock-climbing? What should be your character? Should you be emotional? What should your wear? This process is at work continuously through all phases of our lives, especially when we move in a new environment.

Your masculine side gets expressed when you're working toward a goal, making progress, getting things done, and pushing forward. Due to her insistence, her parents allowed her to go to the United States (US) to pursue her career. Like her, Ms. Savita wants to be a pilot after completing her 12th Standard. She comes from lower income strata. Her father works as a bus conductor in the State Transport Corporation. She has to fight at two levels. She needs to find necessary financial resources to pursue her passion to become a pilot. Secondly, she has to convince her parents that she can also operate a flight like men. 34. Gender Bias Bias : a tendency to prefer one person or thing to another, and to favour that person or thing. these biases have the power to affect behavior. Do we hold biases? Give examples. Gender bias : Conscious bias : doing something knowingly – selection of male candidate over female due to bias about performance or preference. 35. Women are often judged on their appearance - either clothing, weight, attractiveness, or all of the above. Women tend to get promoted on performance, while men get promoted on potential. Women with children are seen as less like “leadership material” and less dedicated to their jobs Why we should be aware of Gender biases? 41. Homework: 1. Interview your family members about their understanding of gender roles. Do you think they always behave according to the ideal which they describe? 2. Try to find out about gender role expectations in other families/communities. Are they different from those of your family/community? 3. Find someone who has tried to break stereotype in their career?
