There are three main types of verbals : Gerunds Particples Infinitives

Gerunds A gerund is the - ing form of a verb that functions as a noun in a sentence. Even though it comes from a verb, it doesn't act as one; instead, it plays the role of a subject, object, or complement, just like any other noun.

Characteristics of Gerunds:

Characteristics of Gerunds: 1. Ends in - ing : All gerunds are formed by adding - ing to the base form of a verb. Example: The verb "swim" becomes "swimming" as a gerund. 2. Acts as a noun : A gerund can serve as the subject , object , or complement in a sentence.

Examples of Gerunds in Different Roles:

1. As a subject A gerund can be the subject of a sentence, meaning it is the one “doing” the action in the grammatical sense of the sentence.

1. As a subject Example: Swimming is a great workout. Running is my favorite form of exercise. Traveling around the world sounds exciting.

2. As an Object: A gerund can also act as the object of a verb or preposition. This means it is receiving the action of the verb.

2. As an Object: Example: She enjoys reading. They discussed moving to a new city. He avoided talking about the problem.

3. As a Complement A gerund can be a subject complement when it follows a linking verb (like "is") and renames or defines the subject..

3. As a Complement: Example: His favorite hobby is painting. Her talent is singing. Their main concern is finding a solution.

Gerunds are a unique kind of verbal, which means they come from verbs but do not act as verbs. Instead, they behave like nouns.
