Unit 08: Stress & its Effects
The only person without stress is a Dead Person -Hans Seley ( Father of stress research)
Objectives: At the end of this unit learners will be able to: Identify major sources of psychological stress Identify factors influencing stress intolerance Develop understanding about achieving self-control through self-modification.
Introduction: Most of us need little introduction to the phenomenon of stress, people response to events that threaten or challenge them, whether it is a paper or an extra deadline, a family problem, or even the ongoing threat of a terrorist attack, life is full of circumstances and events known as stressors that produce threats to our well-being.
Common sources of stress?
Common sources of Stress at Home: Death of spouse, family and near relative or friend. Injury or illness of any family member. Marriage of self, brother or sister. Separation or Divorce Pregnancy or birth of a baby Children's behavior or disobedience Children's educational performance Lack of money and resources Loss of money And many others,,,,,,,
Common Source of Stress @ Work Place Demands of Job Relationship with colleagues Work load Targeted task in time Working overtime Publications if you are in a research field.
All stressors are not equal,,,
Categorizing Stressors: There are three general types of stressors: Cataclysmic Events: are strong stressors that occur suddenly & typically affect many people simultaneously. E.g. Disasters, plane crashes, terrorist attacks. Personal Stressors: include major life events such as the death of a parent or spouse, loss of job, PTSD. Background Stressors: (daily hassles) everyday any ones, such as being stuck in traffic,
Positive Stress: Enables Concentration Increase Performance Energize you into action
Negative Stress: Loss of motivation Reduces effectiveness Physical, mental and behavioral problems.
Post-traumatic Stress Disorder: A phenomenon in which victims of major catastrophes or strong personal stressors feel long-lasting effects that may include re-experiencing the event in flashbacks or dreams
The General Adaptation Syndrome Model: ( GAS=the course of stress) The effects of long-term stress are illustrated in a series of stages proposed by Hans Seley , a pioneering stress theorist ( seley , 1976, 1993). This model, the general adaptation syndrome (GAS), suggests that the physiological response to stress follows the same set pattern regardless of the cause of stress.
Phases Of GAS Model: The GAS model has three phases: The first stage _____Alarm The second stage ___ Resistance/Mobilization The third stage ____ Exhaustion
Conclusion: Stress is a response to threatening or challenging environmental condition. There are series of sources of stress The consequences of stress can be explained in part by SELEY,s general adaptation syndrome. Coping with stress can take a number of forms.
