Modern art

Objectives: To know… Distinct characteristics of arts from the various art movements, Be able to… Identify representative artists from the various art movements.

What is modern art? Refers to artistic work produced during the period extending roughly from the 1860s to the 1970s. They introduced variety of new styles , that not only broke artistic traditions of the past but also pointed the way to future innovations . 20th century

What is style? The manner in which the artist portrays his or her subject matter and how the artist expresses his or her vision .

Why study modern art? It teaches us new ways of seeing and expressing the world. It develops critical thinking through the analysis of each art work. Visual record of history, society, and culture.

Why study modern art? It triggers imaginative exploration that may expand into areas like science and technology. It allows citizens to be earth friendly through the use of recycled materials. It evokes joy and relaxation and reduces negative emotions through Art Therapy.

Why study modern art? It teaches empathy and allows us to see and feel through other people’s eyes and hearts.

Modern art Impressionist and Expressionist art

Impressionism art It described as an art style that tried to capture an impression of what the eyes sees at a given moment and the effect of sunlight on the object.

Characteristics of impressionism Impressionists paint quickly in order to capture the “impression” of the subject right at the moment. Time and motion . They concentrate on painting the changes in color and shape caused by light at different times of the day.

Characteristics of impressionism They also prefer painting outdoors because they believe that the color of the shade is influenced by the surrounding colors . Their use of tiny dabs and ashes of bright colors . Their subjects usually made include the people of the city life involved in everyday events

Claude monet (1840-1926) founder of impressionism painting The term "impressionism" is derived from the title of his painting  Impression, Sunrise

He was the leader of the Impressionists, and he had a long-lasting fascination with observing and painting light and nature. Impressionist artist who explores “what do I see and how do I record it in painting?”

Expressionism art The art movement in which artworks conveyed strong feelings. A rt in which the image of reality is distorted in order to make it expressive of the artist's inner feelings or ideas .

Cubism Pablo picasso and georges braque That all shape in nature are based on geometric shapes the sphere, cone, and cylinder. They brought different views of subjects together in the same picture, resulting in painting that appear fragmented and abstract.

SURREALISM IT MEANS SHOWING THE IMAGE OF THE SUBCONSCIOUS MIND. SURREALISTS WANTED TO TAP INTO A “HIGHER REALITY” THAN WHAT THE EYE SEES IN THE REAL WORLD. THEY CHANNELED THE UNCONSCIOUS AS A MEANS TO UNLOCK THE POWER OF HUMAN IMAGINATION. THEIR WORKS REACHED INTO THE WORLD OF THE PRIVATE MIND, WHICH IS USUALLY RESTRICTED BY REASON AND SOCIAL LIMITATION.

SURREALIST BELIEVED THAT THE RATIONAL MIND REPRESSED THE POWER OF IMAGINATION. MANY SURREALIST ARTISTS USED “AUTOMATISM” (UNCONSCIOUS OR INVOLUNTARY ACT) IN DRAWING TO UNLOCK IDEAS AND IMAGES FROM THEIR UNCONSCIOUS MINDS, WHILE OTHERS DEPICTED HIDDEN PSYCHOLOGICAL TENSIONS.

SALVADOR DALI HE IS AMONG THE MOST VERSATILE AND PROLIFIC ARTIST OF THE 20 TH CENTURY AND THE MOST FAMOUS SURREALIST. THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY

SURREALISM EXAMPLE

ABSTRACT REALISM THE GOAL OF THIS STYLE IS TO USE HYPOTHETICAL PAINTING TECHNIQUES TO SOMEHOW CHANGE THE PERCEPTION OF A REAL OBJECT. ARTISTS ALTER IT THROUGH IMPRESSIONIST, SURREALIST, OR EXPRESSIONIST STYLE TO MAKE THE PAINTING RECOGNIZABLE BUT SOMEWHAT BLURRED AND TWISTED.

BENJAMIN CRUZ He is an award-winning Filipino painter who has the ability to dream and create new worlds. He transforms his pieces to new heights with this concept of manipulating dimensionality. The artist takes inspiration from the landscapes around him that go away beyond realism

Pop art (popular art) Is the art style of popular culture. It was an art movement with a view of positivity about the post-war consumer boom during the 1950s and 1960s. It consisted of many styles of painting and sculpture from different nations, which incorporated common things such as newspapers, comic strips, or food cans into their artwork. Pop art is a style grounded in consumer culture, supported by the mass media and popular culture , thus, making it so much more accessible to the average person.

Describe pop art as “designed for a mass audience, with a short-term solution, expendable, or easily forgotten, low costing, mass-produced, aimed at youth, witty, sexy, gimmicky, glamorous, big business” Pop art uses images that are relatable and easily identifiable. Richard hamilton

Optical art (OP art) It is an art about physical sensations . Developed in the US in the 1960s, its artists create and organize lines, patterns, and design that sharpen the viewer’s eye perception . In Op art, the eyes have it.

Victor vasarely Hungarian born and one of the key figures in the creation of Op art. His lifelong fascination with line and pattern, along with his experiments with creating the illusion of movement in his paintings , became a significant influence on younger artists of the time.

m.c. escher He created works with interesting but complicated compositions. His staircase and waterfalls seemed to go up at the same time as they go down. As a result of these earlier developments, viewers began to see Op art .

Optical illusion Employed special effects made possible by emerging old techniques and new technology . The information gathered by the eye is processed in the brain to give perception that does not tally with a physical measurement of the source .

Performance art An art form that combines visual art with dramatic performance An artwork or art exhibition created through actions executed by the artist or other participants . It may be witnessed live or through documentation , spontaneously developed or written, and is traditionally presented to a public in a fine art context in an interdisciplinary mode
