What is a Scientist? Unit One, Lesson 1.4 By Margielene D. Judan

LESSON OUTLINE Introduction Values of a Good Scientist Careers in Science Feature: Foreign Scientist of the Week!

Scientists help us in a lot of ways.

Without them, we will not be enjoying the benefits of technology and science.

What is a Scientist? A  scientist , in a broad sense, is one engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge. In a more restricted sense, a scientist may refer to an individual who uses the scientific method.

Anyone could be a scientist. You just need imagination, as what Einstein said. Also, you need to be systematic.

But not all scientists are good scientists. In order to be a good scientist, you need to develop values .

VALUES OF A GOOD SCIENTIST Perseverance Honesty Responsibility Discipline

Perseverance Never gives up (even though faced with failures) Bold enough to do the impossible

Honesty Reflects the truth in his findings Provides wrong information

Responsibility Hold themselves accountable for the consequences of their study Careful of their research

Discipline Systematic- follows the scientific method Follows procedures strictly and exactly as possible Not making shortcuts

Assignment (to be passed tomorrow) Answer the handout that will be given to you. It is a scientific test designed to determine your scientific attitude. It’s like a psychological test. Answer it as honest as you can, no time limit. There is neither correct nor wrong answer, but you will be credited points for answering it.

CAREERS IN SCIENCE Forensic Pharmacologist Sports Scientist Embryologist Life Scientist

Forensic Scientist Investigates crimes by collecting and analyzing physical evidence

Pharmacologist Investigates how potential medicines interact with biological systems Aim to understand how drugs work

Sports Scientist Study how to enhance sports and physical performance and prevent injury

Embryologist Studies the development of living organisms from fertilized egg stage through hatchling or birth Doctoral degree is required because embryology is an specialization

Life Scientist Studies living organisms, their habitat and interactions Life science is a very diverse field.

Life Scientist: Physical Therapist Carry treatment programs to restore body parts

Life Scientist: Medical Technologist Do complicated diagnostic tests involving chemical analysis, microscopic examination of tissues, and cultures of body fluids to determine the presence of bacteria and other microorganisms

Life Scientist: Clinical Dietitian Develop and carry out nutritional plans for patients

Foreign Scientist of the Week!

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543)

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) Notable Scientific Accomplishment Proposed Heliocentric Theory- the sun is the center of the universe; and made Copernican model of solar system He was a monk from Poland.

Nicolaus Copernicus (1473-1543) Copernican Model of the Solar System> Back then, people believe that the earth was the center of the solar system. But his good scientific attitude enabled Copernicus to prove that the sun was the center, not the earth.

Activity Time!

What scientific attitude did Isaac Newton displayed when he failed a thousand times in creating the first light bulb, but didn’t give up ? According to Newton, which is more important, inspiration or hard work? Explain. Why is honesty an important attitude of a scientist? What about conspiracies? Do they affect people positively or negatively? How? (more on the next slide) *Minimum of 5 sentences per item (10 pts each) **No need to copy (1 whole sheet)

Among the 4 values mentioned, which value do you think best describes you? On the other hand, which doesn’t best describes you? If you are to be a scientist, what career would you like to take? Explain. ***NOTHING FOLLOWS*** *Minimum of 5 sentences per item (10 pts each) **No need to copy (1 whole sheet)
