U1L1 SPECIFIC EXPECTATIONS identify the characteristics of an organization (e.g., purpose, division of labour, hierarchy of authority); evaluate the different levels of management with respect to roles, responsibilities, activities, skills, and competencies; evaluate major management theories and practices (e.g., classical, behavioural, quantitative approach, systems theories; total quality management) demonstrate the effective use of information and communication technology (e.g., word processing software, e-mail, electronic research tools) for a variety of management purposes; demonstrate appropriate techniques for making group and individual presentations (e.g., use a variety of appropriate visual aids, make eye contact where appropriate, speak clearly); demonstrate an understanding of management concepts and theories discussed in relation to current business issues in a variety of sources (e.g., newspapers, magazines, documentaries, websites);

Learning Goals At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to clearly and thoroughly: understand the course expectations and requirements Understand the break down of the course content, including course materials, unit titles, hours and strands Understand the difference between Assessment for Learning, Assessment as Learning and Assessment of Learning Understand what type of learning strategies we will apply in BOH4M in order to promote Learning Skills and Work Habits such as responsibility, organization, independent work, collaboration, initiative, and self-regulation. Understand the assessment levels, categories of achievement, and % marks breakdown of all AOL assignments including the 30% of Final Evaluation. Ensure that all students understand the BOH4M tools of program planning and considerations that they have at their disposal in order to be successful Ensure that all students understand the meaning of success criteria and how to co-create them with the teacher (i.e. building the RUBRICS AND CHECKLISTS TOGETHER)

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course focuses on the development of leadership skills used in managing a successful business. Students will analyse the role of a leader in business, with a focus on decision making, management of group dynamics, workplace stress and conflict, motivation of employees, and planning. Effective business communication skills, ethics, and social responsibility are also emphasized. Prerequisite: NONE

Overall Curriculum Expectations Overall Curriculum Expectations Throughout the course, the Overall Expectations are covered via FIVE separate strands over FIVE different units. Please follow along carefully as I go over the strands. The strands are: STRAND I: FOUNDATIONS OF MANAGEMENT By the end of this strand, students will : assess the role of management within an organization; demonstrate the use of appropriate communication techniques related to business management; evaluate the impact of issues related to ethics and social responsibility on the management of organizations.

STRAND II: LEADING By the end of this course, students will : 4. apply an understanding of human behaviour to explain how individuals and groups function in the workplace; 5. demonstrate an understanding of group dynamics; 6. demonstrate an understanding of proper leadership techniques in a variety of situations.  

STRAND III: Management Challenges By the end of this course, students will : 7. demonstrate an understanding of the communication process within the workplace; evaluate the strategies used by individuals and organizations to manage stress and conflict; compare theories of how to motivate individuals and teams in a productive work environment.  

STRAND IV: PLANNING AND CONTROLLING By the end of this course, students will : 10. analyse the importance of planning to the success of an organization; 11. demonstrate an understanding of appropriate planning tools and techniques in a variety of situations; 12. analyse the relationship between strategic planning and the success of an organization; 13. analyse how companies respond to internal and external pressures for change; 14. assess the importance of control in management

In this unit, students will assess the role of management within an organization and learn to demonstrate the use of appropriate communication techniques related to business management. Students will evaluate the impact of issues related to ethics and social responsibility on the management of organizations.

Unit Descriptions UNIT 2: THE ART OF LEADING 25 HRS. In this unit, you will examine the factors that motivate individuals and groups. You will learn about the elements that shape human behaviour. In addition, you will examine the role of certain functional teams in the workplace, including how they develop and the problems they are likely to encounter. You will look at the principles of leadership, as well as the various leadership styles that you may encounter in the workplace.

Unit Descriptions UNIT 3: MANAGEMENT CHALLENGES THROUGH THEORY 20 HRS. In this unit, you will learn about a variety of challenges that managers face in their careers: dealing with staffing and human resources, managing stress and conflict in the workplace, preparing for and adapting to changes, controlling resource allocation and other operations, and dealing with ethical issues and the organization’s social responsibility. You will discover that management is a complex profession and that to become a successful manager, you will have to study and train.

Unit Descriptions UNIT 4: MANAGEMENT LOGISTICS: PLANNING AND CONTROLLING 20 HRS. In this unit, you will learn various planning strategies, and its critical importance to the success of a business. We will analyze several factors that leaders use when deciding how to best plan for the future success of the business, and when things go wrong, how leaders use controlling techniques to make adjustments. Students will analyze, preform and use some of the most important tools when it comes to planning and controlling.

Unit Descriptions UNIT 5: MANAGEMENT DELEGATION THROUGH AN ASSIGNED GLOBAL LEADER: ORGANIZING Through an assigned Global Leader, students will demonstrate an understanding of the various organizational structures used to manage the workforce effectively; assess the ways in which organizational structures have changed to adapt to the changing nature of work; and evaluate the role of human resources within an organization pre-testing AFL and AAL learning process leading to the final Testing AOL task: . I. AAL: Brainstorm Culminating Activity handout and select one of the assigned inquiry project topics. AFL: Locate Primary and Secondary Sources, including relevant textbook chapter (s) and various document as well as documentary analyses. II. AFL/AAL: Prepare, organize, summarize and synthesize relevant research notes and personal reflections. III. AAL: Work with research notes to develop the Seminar outline. IV. AAL & AFL: Engage in a writing process of a Formal Business Leadership Organization and Delegation Portfolio of an Assigned Global Leader V. AOL Culminating Activity: Produce a well-researched, developed and polished Power Point Presentation.
