Forms of Communication

Higher designation to lower designation. Ex. Boss ordered his worker. Here effect of this type of communication is very much than upward communication.

Lower designation to higher designation. Ex. Worker request to his boss. Here the effect of communication is less than downward communication.

Vertical & Horizontal Communication

Informal communication We use this type of communication with our family or friends. Three types of informal communication. (1) lateral (2) diagonal (3) grapevine

Lateral communication. Found among members working at the same level. Ex. Peer group. - Most effective form of communication. - Barrier of subordinates or boss is not present here.

Diagonal communication. The path is mixture of vertical and horizontal movement. In large communications various departments need communication support from each other.

Grapevine communication. Also called as “backbiting” or “backstabbing”. A backstabber is a colleague or an employee who acts like a friend in public but badmouth you in private .

Face to face communication Face-to-face communication is communication that happens in real time with faces being visible. Face-to-face communication is no longer limited to in-person contact. Video conferencing is also a form of face-to-face communication, even though it uses technology to connect the participants.

Advantage: Responses immediately : When people communicate each other in person, they can get a response immediately without misunderstanding. Express of feelings : Using face-to-face communication helps people express their feelings, ideas much better. Suitable for discussion : Face-to-face communication is particularly suitable for discussion, for there is immediate feedback from the listener. Conversation to learn : We learn a great deal via conversation, including conversations with ourselves. We learn highly valuable life lessons. Conversation to coordinate : Coordinating our action in ways that are mutually beneficial.

Disadvantage: Difficult to practice in large-sized organization : Face-to-face communication is extremely difficult to practice in large-sized organizations, particularly if their various units or departments are situated at different places. Not effective in large gatherings : It is very difficult to get a message across to large gatherings. Ineffective if the listener is not attentive : A limitation which the face-to-face communication shares with oral communication is that its effectiveness is closely linked with the listener’s attentiveness. Not accountable Face to face communication is difficult to hold someone responsible or accountable for something spoken face to face Low legal and reference value Face to face communication is oral; no written records are kept so it cannot be quoted in the court of law.

Barriers to Communication No matter how good the communication system in an organization is, unfortunately barriers can and do often occur . Communication of barriers are the difficulties involved in the process of communication which distort the message being properly understand by the receiver.
