I aim to design a type of font that can be used in typography, signage, visual
communication, furniture and product design, and branding. My main aim is to
focus on French style to demonstrate the Classical Didone French Feeling during
the 18th to 19th centuries and combine it with today’s modern, for any French
furniture companies and designers to use on their posters, books, magazines, and
concept generators (mood board).
During my research process, the inspiration came from the French armchair
- Bergere. I will consider the Didot serifs classification which has a strong
contrast between very black and imposing solids and extremely delicate strokes
letterforms with elegant retro style—representing the shape structure of the
furniture pieces, to connect with France style and linking back to the graphic
design. It will be a lowercase with a higher x-height and high contrast on strokes
for reading purposes.

Inspiration Research
Typeface Research/Connection
Didot, the classification as Didone. The Didot
typeface is characterized by increased stroke
contrast, hairline strokes, vertical stress and
unbracketed serifs. The Didot typeface takes its
name from the French printing and type-designing
family -Didot, who played a significant role in the
development of this typeface during the late 18th
and 19th centuries.
Connecting with Didot to French interior style,
I found classical French Didot font is a suitable
typeface for my topic. Not only do they both
come from French, is their elements such as lines,
shapes, and curves are similar, interesting and
elegant to the reader.
I would like to design a typeface that can be used
in typography, signage, visual communication,
furniture and product design, also branding.
French Arm Chair
The French Bergère chair is a classic and elegant piece of furniture that originated in 18th-century France during the Rococo period. Known for its distinctive design, the Bergère chair is characterized by its
upholstered seat, backrest, and armrests, often surrounded by a wooden frame. This chair is renowned for its comfort, versatility, and graceful aesthetic, making it a staple in both traditional and contemporary
interior design. One of the most famous French Bergère chairs is the Louis XV Bergère chair. It will be the main inspiration idea for my type font design.

Sketch Developments
Some UPPER case sketches during weeks 3-4 In class,
we mentioned keeping the curve style and we tried the
lower-case to link with the French feeling, which may be
more suitable for my design intent
Lowercase we mentioned keeping the curve feeling since most furniture is
not perfectly straight. The red circle is the main direction I going with. To
become more modern, we make the curve not stronger and the bottom is
the one I will be the focus. The descent line will be more shorter(closer to
base line)
