About

My aim is to create a simple WordPress manual that will help to get an overall understanding of how to
use various features within WordPress dashboard to keep your site or blog updated.
If you are looking for more in-depth knowledge, there are heaps of articles in the WordPress codex that
go more in the detail. This is great if you want to get really involved in developing your own WordPress
theme or modifying your site plug-ins, but it can be little daunting for those users who just want a
simple guide to using Content Management side of WordPress or just need to update their site pages so
often.

Introduction

WordPress is an Open Source software system used by millions of people around the world to create
beautiful websites and blogs. It is completely customizable by the use of themes and plug-ins.
Themes can be easily downloaded from the official WordPress site or from hundreds of other places
around the web. The same goes with plug-ins, which are used to extend the functionality of your
WordPress site.
A fantastic blogging site, WordPress has big community of designers, developers and bloggers who share
their knowledge and expertise through videos, articles, tutorials and blog posts. They also are reason
behind thousands of themes and plug-ins.
Getting Started

Before we start on how to use and make most of WordPress, first we need to Sign Up and create an
account.
1. Go to WordPress home page. Open browser and type https://wordpress.com/ and press Enter. You
will get WordPress home page as below.

Figure 1: WordPress Home Page

2. Click on “Sign Up” as marked in image below. It is present on top of home page.

Figure 2: Header bar

3. Select a category which best describes your blog. For example, I selected “Writing & Books” as
marked in image below.

Figure 3: Blog category
4. List of subcategories come up once “Writing & Books” is selected, as shown in image below. Select
one that will closely describe your blog. For example, I selected “General Writing & Books”.

Figure 4: Blog sub-category

5. Select one design pattern from options given. This helps WordPress figure out what designs to show
in future. I selected middle one. Also there is “Back” option available in case some changes need to
be done.

Figure 5: Blog layout selection

6. Choose a theme for your blog from options given. Themes can be changed later based on one’s
preferences and needs. I chose “Goran” for this example, one on right of first row.

7. Choose a domain for your blog. Enter in search box given.

8. Enter blog address and select one of options given. If what is typed does not show, it indicates
unavailability of particular address. Click “Select” to choose blog address.

9. Pick a plan that suits your needs and budget. Here “Free” plan is selected.

Benefits of different plans are listed below each column. Below image shows the advantages of different
membership plans:
