Various Leadership Styles By Swarup S (1 st Sem BBA)
Leadership – Meaning and Definition Leadership is a process whereby a manager induces his subordinates to work with confidence and zeal towards the achievement of organization’s objectives. According to Theo Haimann, “Leadership is the process by which the executive imaginatively directs, guides, and influences the work of others in choosing and attaining specified goals by mediating between the individuals and the organization in such a manner that both will attain maximum satisfaction”.
Importance Of Leadership Clarification of goals:- A leader interrupts and explains the objective of the group to his followers. Motivation:- A leader creates self confidence and enthusiasm among his subordinates. He directs the potential talent of employees towards the achievement of goal. Representation:- A leader serves as the representative of his followers. He protects their interest and serve as their guardian. Morale Building:- A Leader builds up dedication and loyalty among the group members. He develops mutual cooperation and self-discipline among people.
Leadership Style Leadership style refers to a leader’s behavior. The behavioral pattern which a leader adopts in influencing his followers is known as leadership style. It is the outcome of leader’s personality, philosophy, experience, and value system. According to the degree of power exercised by the leader, there can be following styles of leadership:-
Autocratic or Authoritative Leadership Leader takes all decision himself without consulting the followers. Leader gives orders and insists that they should be obeyed. Subordinates are expected to do what they are told. Thus, under this style all decision making power is centralized with the leader. Leader considers his subordinates immature and delegates no authority to them. He exercises close supervision over subordinates. Leader holds out threats of punishment or uses his powers to distribute reward on the assumption that people are lazy and will avoid work.
Advantages Disadvantages It permits quick decision as a single person takes decision. It provides strong motivation and satisfaction to the leader. Less competent subordinates are needed at lower level. Many subordinates prefer to work under centralized authority. People dislike this style especially when motivational style is negative. It leads to frustration, low morale and conflicts. There is resistance to change as workers feels harassed and disturbed. Due to lack of opportunity to exercise initiative and judgement, future leadership does not develop.
Participative or Democratic Leadership Leader makes decisions jointly with his followers. He decentralizes authority and allow the group to share his power. Instead of taking unilateral decisions, leader allows the subordinates to discuss the problem and to express their opinions freely. This style is based on the assumption that the leader derives his power by consent of the followers who are mature and can be creative.
Advantages Disadvantages It may be slow, leading to delay in decision. It may be covertly used to manipulate employees. It may not be liked by people who want minimum interaction with superior and subordinates. Participation will not be meaningful unless the subordinates understand thoroughly the complex process of the organization. It reduces resistance to change and increases acceptance to new ideas. It improves the attitude of employees towards their job and organization. It increases cooperation between the management and workers. It improves morale and reduces complaint or grievances.
Free Rein Or Laissez Faire Leadership Leader gives complete freedom to his followers to establish their own goal and policies Leader does not lead and avoids power. He maintains contacts with outsider to bring information and resources required by the group. Leader abdicates his authority and lets the group to operate entirely on its own.
Advantages Disadvantages Complete freedom to subordinates improves their motivation and morale. There is maximum opportunity for development of subordinates. As there is abdication of formal leadership role, informal leaders emerge to fill the void. The group does not get the benefit of leader’s inspiration, motivation, guidance. It can only succeed when the followers are highly mature, able and self motivated. It ignores the manager’s contribution.
