VICENTE MANANSALA’S BACKGROUND Vicente Silva Manansala was a painter and an illustrator, he was born in Macabebe , Pampanga, on January 22, 1910. He is the second of eight children of Perfecto Q. Manansala and Engracia Silva. He is a Filipino artist who was one of the first Abstractionists on the country's art scene. From 1926 to 1930, he studied at the U.P. School of Fine Arts. In 1949, Manansala received a six-month grant by UNESCO to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Banff and Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In 1950, he received a nine-month scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris by the French government. He also trained at the Otis School of Drawing .

VICENTE’S FIELD OF EXPERTISE Manansala is a Cubist painter and illustrator depicting contemporary life at the time were credited for bridging the gap between rural and city life .

SAMPLE WORKS PILA SA BIGAS The painting shows the representation as of one of the effects of martial law which is the rice shortage.

UNTITLED This wondrous rendition of a rural landscape combines the artist’s folk romanticism, with its lyrical colors and archetypes, and Manansala’s postwar modernism. This style is characterized by semi-figurative transparent cubism where forms are not simply fragmented for the sake of formalism, but rather rendered as sensuous facets that overlap, conveying the textures and rhythms of this idyllic environment.

MADONNA OF THE SLUMS His Madonna of the Slums is a portrayal of a mother and child from the countryside who became urban shanty residents once in the city .
