VIPASSANA MEDITATION

INTRODUCTION Vipassana is a Pali term and it means insight, to see things as they really are. It is a scientific technique to explore the laws of nature (called Dhamma), within the framework of one's own mind and body. Also known as ‘Insight Awareness’ or ‘Mindfulness Meditation’.

The technique of Vipassana is a simple, practical way to achieve real peace of mind to lead a happy, useful life. Vipassana means “to see things as they really are”, to see things in their true perspective.

HISTORY It was rediscovered by Gautam Buddha more than 2500 years ago and was taught by him as a universal remedy for universal ills i.e., an art of living. Vipassana is a very ancient meditation technique of India, laudatory references to which are found even in the Rig-Veda. In 1969, Mr. S N Goenka of Myanmar came to India to teach vipassana meditation. In 50 years he has introduced vipassana to thousands of people world wide.

Goenka , 1980, says that the direct experience of a mental-physical phenomenon within one’s own self, this technique of self observation, is what is called Vipassana meditation. Vipassana is to observe things as they really are, not just as they seem to be. Vipassana is a technique of self-examination, a scientific method of self-observation that results in total purification of the mind and the highest happiness of full liberation.

It is a logical process of mental purification through self-observation. In this meditation the mind is a tool to get closer to the reality. Vipassana will lead to liberation

THE MEDITATION CONSISTS OF THREE SUB-UNITS: 1- Anapanasati (Mindfulness of breathing) 2- Vipassana (Insight meditation) 3- Metta Bhavana (Universal love and compassion)

1-ANAPANASATI: In Buddhist meditation, it means 'mindfulness of breathing' ("sati" means mindfulness; " ānāpāna " refers to inhalation and exhalation), Anapanasati has been used as a basis for developing meditative concentration. It has a quietening effect for bodily and mental unrest. Anapanasati is most commonly practiced with attention centered on the breath, without any effort to change the breathing. The practice of focusing one's attention helps in improving thinking capacity, retention power and aids in brain development.

2- VIPASSANA: Move your attention systematically from head to feet and from feet to head, observing in order each and every part of the body by feeling all the sensations that you come across. Observe objectively; that is, remain equanimous with all the sensations that you experience, whether pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, by appreciating their impermanent nature. Keep your attention moving. Never stay for more than a few minutes at any one place. Do not allow the practice to become mechanical. Work in different ways according to the type of sensations you experience. Areas of the body having different gross sensations should be observed separately by moving the attention part by part. Symmetrical parts, such as both arms or both legs, having similar subtle sensations, may be observed together simultaneously. If you experience subtle sensations throughout the physical structure, you may at times sweep the entire body and then again work part by part. At the end of the hour relax, letting any mental or physical agitation subside. Then focus your attention for a few minutes on subtle sensations in the body, and fill your mind and body with thoughts and feelings of goodwill for all beings.

Awareness and equanimity are the two main aspects of Vipassana meditation which help us to deal with all types of situations in life effectively. Vipassana meditation purifies the mind by developing positive qualities like wisdom, peace and harmony. 3-METTA BHAVANA (MAITRY BHAVANA): It is universal love and compassion for all the beings. Loving kindness is unconditional love which means just well-wishing, wishing the goodness, the wellness of ourselves and of other beings and not expecting anything in return
