moleculewithoutproteincoat(nucleicaciddevoidofproteincoat).
•FirstreportedbyDienerandRaymerin1971
•World’sfirstreportedviroidisPotatoSpindleTuberViroid(DienerandRayer,
1971)anditisthemoststudiesviroid.

General properties
•Theyareusuallysmallerthanplantvirusesandareknowntoinfectonlyplants.
•Genomesizerangesformfewhundred(250-401)nucleotideslong,withhighdegreeof
specificity.
•Theydonotcodeforanyproteinsandthusdependonthehostplantorwithassociated
plantvirusfortheirreplicationandotherfunctions
•Viroidsareonlytransmittedthroughmechanicalorsaptransmission,noother(vectors)
transmissiontypehasbeenreportedsofar.
•Sofar40viroiddiseaseshavebeenreportedtobecausedplantdiseasesintheworld.
