Introduction
•Visakhapatnam port is one of the leading major ports of
India it is situated in Visakhapatnam city of Andhra
Pradesh.ThePortislocatedontheeastcoastofIndia.
•The Port has three harbours viz., outer harbour, inner
harbour and the fishing harbour. The outer harbour with a
water spread of 200 hectares has 6 berths and the inner
harbourwithawaterspreadof100hectareshas8berths.

Layout of Port

History
•Visakhapatnam was an ancient Port city which had
trade relations with the Middle East and Rome. Ships
were anchored at open roads and were loaded with
cargotransportedfromVisakhapatnamshorebymeans
ofsmallMasulaboats.
•It has become a settlement of a branch of East India
Company in 1682. Rs. 83 lakh worth of goods were
moved

•Principal commodities traded at anchorage Port
included Muslin cloth - manufactured at Uppada (East
GodavariDistrict),Manganeseore-exportstoUKand
USA, Oilseeds, jaggery, jute and indigo, hides and
skins. Extensive trade relations existed with Burma.

•WiththeadventofBritishRule,in1858,theneed
for a port in this part of the country was
emphasizedinareportofaBritishSurveyParty.
•It was only after the I World War that the
proposalofCol.CartwrightofBritishAdmiralty
for
construction
of
a
harbour
at
Visakhapatnam
at
the
mouth
of
river
Meghadrigedda
was
approved
for
construction

a

•The Port was opened to ocean traffic with the
arrivalofapassengervessel,onthe7thOctober,
1933.
•In the first year of operation, the Port handled
trafficof1.3lakhtonnes.

Island Break-water, constructedby scuttling two

affords
protection
from
cyclones

promontory into the sea, known as Dolphin’s
Nose Hill which is to the north of the entrance
channel.

•ThePortwasconstructedatacostofRs.378lakhs.

•After Independence substantial investments were made in the
successive Five Year Plans for developing the infrastructu re in the
Port.
•The Port administration has passed through different depar tments
and Ministries of the Government of India till its transfer t o the Port
Trust in February, 1964 under Major Port Trusts Act 1963 as sh own

•A deep draft berth in outer harbour with a quay Length of 356
meters to handle vessels of draft upto 14.5 meters is available for
handling imported coking coal. The berth is capable of handling

•The ore received through wagons is tippled and conveyed

Shipping system
•Theshippingsystemreclaimsthecargofromthestacksand
conveysthroughtheconveyorstotheshiploaderforloading
into the ships’ hatches. The system consists of 3 bucket
wheel reclaimers 4000 tonnes per hour capacity, a long
overheadconveyorsystem(4.8kms–oneway).

available at the dedicated berth (WQ 5) with 241

South Asia – a mined rock Cavern at a depth of 200 mtrs.

petroleumproducts.

•A Road running within the Port land was commonly
being used historically over a long period by the Port
CargoTrafficandtheCitypublicbetweenPortareaup
toNH-5.
•Realizingtheneedtoeasecongestionofthetrafficand

•Majordrainsoriginatingfromtheupperreachesofthe
city are discharging the drainage water at different
locations into the Port area before they finally
dischargeintosea.ThesereachesofdrainsinPortarea
arebeingmaintainedregularlybyVisakhapatnamPort
to
ensure
free
flow
of
water
and
to
keep
clean
to
ensure

•One10MLDsewagetreatmentplantisinoperationto
treatthesewageandsullageenteringintoportwaters
fromthecity.
•An annual expenditure of about 70.00 Lakhs is being

•In line with the policies of the Government of India for

•Alarge Sports complex with various facilities for Sports &
Cultural activities was developed by the Port in the early

Current Information about the Port

•Visakhapatnam port chairman M T Krishna Babu has said that th e
port has handled 20.64 million tonnes of cargo till the end of July
during the current financial year against 19.72 million ton nes last
year,registeringagrowthof5percent.

•It was able to navigate the first-ever capesize vessel, m.v. MGM

•The dredging works of inner harbour to facilitate the naviga tion of
14 m draft vessels would be completed on schedule and the port
would be able soon be above to handle fully laden panamax vess els
intheinnerharbour.

•Krishna Babu said the port had taken up ambitious
projects to augment its capacity and also to modernise
theexistingberths.
•The development of WQ-6 berth for handling multi-
cargoes and EQ-10 for handling liquid cargoes in the
inner harbour takenup at an estimated cost ofRs.170
crorewasprogressingandtheywouldbeoperationalby

•He said concessions would be awarded soon for
upgrading iron ore handling facilities at the outer
harbour and another project - extension of existing
container terminal - agreement would be signed
shortly.Theseprojectswouldbringinaninvestmentof
Rs.1,479crore.
