Visible Light Properties and Uses

• All waves in the electromagnetic spectrum are light waves • Visible light – part of the spectrum that humans CAN see

• Human eyes detect the brightness, or intensity, of visible light, which is determined by the amplitude of a light wave • Human eyes are sensitive to EM wave that range from 380 nanometers to about 740 nanometers and a frequency of 430-770 THz, that’s why its called the Visible spectrum

human eyes do not detect wavelengths outside of this range • The visible light range further divides into smaller regions depending on wavelength; humans recognize these smaller regions as colors . Visible light is produced by vibrations and rotations of atoms and molecules

Visible Light White light passes through a Prism and separates into different colors *ROY G BIV * Red has the longest wavelength, lowest energy *Violet has the shortest wavelength, highest energy

Light waves travel in straight lines from their source. When a light wave strikes an object, the light will do three things: transmit (go through an object), reflect (to bounce off an object), and/or absorb (the energy of the light wave transforms into heat).

CLASSIFICATION OF MATERIAL BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF LIGHT THEY TRANSMIT TRANSPARENT- allow complete transmission of light. Ex. Pure glass OPAQUE - either reflect or absorb any incident light.x . Wood, stone, etc .

3. TRANSLUCENT -allow partial transmission of light through them. A part of the incident light may get reflected or scattered as it passes through the interior of the material. Any object, seen through a translucent material, appears fuzzy or blurred. Some examples are oily paper, tissue, some plastics, etc.

Visible Light Every object absorbs some visible light and reflects some visible light Mirrors reflect almost all visible light

PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS : In order for you to see an object, visible light must be reflected off it and meet your eye Light gives light to the screen of most electronic devices. Artificial lights like flashlights, lamp and etc are any light source that produce light instead of natural lights from the Sun

White reflects all colors (ROY G BIV) Black absorbs all colors (ROY G BIV) Optical Fibers - optical fibers in medicine is endoscopy, a flexible tube with tiny camera that is used to observe the internal parts of the body.
