Damage of Lesser grain borer

Distribution: Originally, an inhabitant of India, this insect has now spread to the rest of world. It has been reported as a pest from Algeria, Greece , United States, Australia, Japan Pakistan and China. Food: wheat, Rice, Maize, Jowar, Barley, Gram, flour and Dried fruits etc. NOD: The damage is caused by both beetle and grub but beetle is more harmful then the grub. The grub eat out the starchy contents of the grains leaving the outer husk only while beetle destroy whole grains which are reduced to frass and waste flour. The first stage larva is straight and can bore sound grain but in the later stages of growth it is curved , therefore, it become difficult to them to penetrate the grain and now feed on the waste flour left by the adults. Sometimes adult beetles attack the grain in the field itself. The serious is caused during May to August. Management : Natural enemies- ( i ) Lariophagus distinguendus is a grub parasite (ii) Pediculoides sp. – A mite predating on eggs and grubs.
