Volcanoes According to Activity
Active Volcanoes -- exhibit volcanic activity such as rumbling, crater glow, eruption, and earthquakes within the last 10,000 years --there are 1,350 potentially active volcanoes Example: Taal Volcano Mayon Volcano Mount Canlaon Mount Pinatubo
Inactive Volcanoes -- show no historical record of eruption in the past 10,000 years --have the potential to erupt Example: Mount Fuji Mauna Kea Mount Ararat
Extinct Volcano -- have no record of eruption -- they do not have a magma supply Example: Mount Buninyong in Australia Kyushu-Palau Ridge in Philippine Sea
Other Associated Volcano Landforms Caldera Complex - A depression formed at the summit of shield volcanoes Lava Dome - mounds of lava formed after a volcanic eruption. Has high levels of silica and low amounts of dissolved gases. Submarine Volcano - Volcanoes on the ocean floor and formed through collision of oceanic plates. Glacial Volcanoes Volcanoes that are overlain by glaciers. Ex. Alaska Volcano
Volcanic Eruptions
Hawaiian Eruption -the least violent type, with a highly fluid or runny lava flowing out several vents. Strombolian Eruption -violent, featuring continuous ejection of magma and gas that results in the formation of volcanic bombs, and cinder cones.
Vulcanian Eruption -a thick viscous magma flows around the vent as solid lava and dust ejected Plinian Eruption - The most violent and explosive type of eruption. It is accompanied by pyroclastic debris and lahars.
