7/4/2015 Col PK Chaturvedi, Retd 28 F EMALE are vulnerable to reproductive tract problems. Doctors warn of serious health complications like sexual tract infection (STI), reproductive tract infection (RTI), urinary tract infection (UTI) and tubal infection among girls after marriage. UTI: Urine is normally sterile, and the normal flow of urine usually prevents bacteria from infecting the urinary tract. With urinary retention, the abnormal urine flow gives bacteria at the opening of the urethra a chance to infect the urinary tract. Bladder damage: If the bladder becomes stretched too far or for long periods, the muscles may be permanently damaged and lose their ability to contract. Kidney damage: In some people, urinary retention causes urine to flow backward into the kidneys. This backward flow, called reflux, may damage or scar the kidneys

7/4/2015 Col PK Chaturvedi, Retd 46 Will the PeePoo Disposable Toilet Work For Indian Slums? Biodegradable plastic bag containing urea crystals that serves as a single-use disposable ‘toilet’ for people that lack access to regular toilets. The urea crystals kill the harmful bacteria in the excrement that would ordinarily end up contaminating water supplies and spreading very preventable diseases. Bag will be sold for $.02 – .03 , so an average Indian slum family of 5 would spend 10 – 15 cents (or Rs 5 – 8 ) per day, or Rs. 150 – 230 per month for their waste disposal needs. Otherwise:- Option 1: Status quo. Open defecation wherever you want. Financial cost: zero. Option 2: Govt’s toilet. Financial cost: Rs. 1000 unsubsidized; or Rs. 100 with NGO subsidy. Option 3: Pay-use toilet. Financial cost: Rs. 1-5 per use. Question of privacy for women in Indian slums is often the driving force

7/4/2015 Col PK Chaturvedi, Retd 60 Working Principle Two leach pits are linked with a Y junction. Only one pit is used at a time as the Y junction is blocked for the other. When it is full, the pit is sealed and the other is brought in use. The excreta in the sealed pit will decompose by composting and anaerobic digestion. After two years, the sludge is safe. Capacity/Adequacy Can be built if water and space are available. But in regions prone to flooding or with rocky soils , water pollution can occur. Also, if too many pits are installed densely, they can rapidly overflow or lead to pollution. Costs Moderate to high investment costs; very low O&M costs Self-help Compatibility Can be constructed with local manpower, but skilled design is required. Operation & Maintenance (O&M) Control of Y junction; De sludging every two years. Main strength Easy to use and high comfort (anal cleansing with water, no odour). Main weakness Requires water for flushing; Risk of water pollution.
7/4/2015 Col PK Chaturvedi, Retd 61 Disadvantages Manual removal of pit humus is required (it is dug, not pumped out) Clogging is frequent when bulky cleansing materials are used Higher risk of groundwater contamination due to more leachate than with waterless systems Water-based technology, thus anticipates availability of water and long retention times Relatively high investment costs Requires space Advantages Because double pits are used alternately, their life is virtually unlimited Excavation of humus is easier than faecal sludge Potential for use of stored faecal material as soil conditioner Flies and odours are significantly reduced (compared to pits without a water seal) Can be built and repaired with locally available materials Low (but variable) capital costs depending on materials; no or low operating costs if self-emptied Moderate reduction in pathogens However, too many wet pits in a small area is not recommended as the soil matrix may not be of sufficient capacity to absorb all the liquid and the ground could become water-logged (oversaturated). In order for the pits to drain properly, the soil must have a good absorptive capacity; clay, tightly packed or rocky soils are not appropriate. This technology is not suitable for areas with a high water table or where there is frequent flooding
