WATER UTILIZATION What is Water Utilization Plan? 1 st Where do we get our water? Purchased water (supplier name and address) Well or groundwater supplies (watershed name, location and owning authority) Alternative supplies (rainwater harvesting, gray water, reclaimed water, etc.) 3 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved.
Slide 4
WATER UTILIZATION 2 nd Where is all the water used? Identify measured annual water usage (meter readings or alternate) Identify all processes that utilize incoming water (estimating or metered) Production Bathrooms Facilities – Chillers, HVAC, etc. Totalize water usage including measured and estimated for all water sources. Note: Total of all incoming water should equal the total annual purchased 4 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved. What is Water Utilization (i.e. Water Balance Exercise)? This is CRITICAL for the sustainable water management!!
Slide 5
WATER UTILIZATION What is Water Utilization (i.e. Water Balance Exercise)? 3 rd What is the total outgoing water? Identify all outgoing water (metered and estimated) Discharge from meter readings/alternate (calculate) All non-metered processes (estimate the typical annual water discharge from an alternate flow rate measurement, equipment specifications and patterns of usage to be performed by a competent professional (e.g., facility engineer). Totalize water discharge including measured and estimated for all water sources. 4 th Where are we losing water? Calculate the percent water loss by using the following equation: (Incoming – Discharged)/Incoming x 100. 5 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved. Note: Example template water balance exercise is provided in Appendix B!! INCOMING WATER WATER USAGE OUTGOINGWATER DOMESTIC BOILERS INDUSTRIAL SANITATION COOLING FOOD PREP
Slide 6
WATER UTILIZATION What is the easiest way to determine Water Utilization per process? Answer: Inline Water Meters or external water measurements (clamp on) Advantages: Accurate, saves time in calculations/estimations of water flow Disadvantages: It cost money, maintenance/calibration, and replacement schedule required 6 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. Slide 7
WATER CONSERVATION BASICS Who should have methods for conserving water? EVERYONE All sites shall include a list of methods for limiting unnecessary water usage, which shall include: Inspections of building water systems and piping to catch issues (i.e., water leaks, deterioration of equipment or piping) Preventative maintenance and equipment replacement schedule Communication campaigns for the reduction and importance of limit water usage 7 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. WATER CONSERVATION INITIATIVE PROJECTS – TOP 10 (IF APPLICABLE) Is the site required to have Water Conservation Initiative Projects? Does the site report water usage in Sustainability Data Platform (example Credit 360)? Is the site a top 10 water consumers? IF ALL ABOVE YES , then your site needs Water Conservation Projects 8 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved. Slide 9
WATER CONSERVATION INITIATIVE PROJECTS – HIGH & EXTREMELY HIGH (IF APPLICABLE) Is the site required to have Water Conservation Initiative Projects? Does the site report water usage in Sustainability Data Platform (example Credit 360)? Is the site in an extremely high or high on Jabil Water stressed List? Does the site use water in the manufacturing process? IF ALL ABOVE YES , then your site needs Water Conservation Projects 9 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved.
Slide 10
DRINKING WATER - DOES IT APPLY TO THE SITE? Is the site required to have a Drinking Water Section? Is the water provided by a regulated water supplier? Does the supplier provide an annual water quality report? IF ALL ABOVE YES , then your site is not required to have this section. 10 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved.
Slide 11
DRINKING WATER - DOES IT APPLY TO THE SITE? Is the site required to have a Drinking Water Section? Is the water provided by a regulated water supplier? Does the supplier provide an annual water quality report? IF ALL ABOVE NO , then your site is required to have this section and a Sampling, Analysis and Monitoring plan for the drinking water supply. Note: Review Requirements in Drinking (i.e. Portable) water section 11 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved.
Slide 12
DRINKING WATER – WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE / DO 1) Water Permits (if applicable) 2) Local Drinking Water Regulatory Requirements (if applicable) 3) Where there are NO local regulatory requirements, then follow World Health Organization (WHO) Guidelines for drinking Water - GDWQ 4) If site has any system(s) for treat drinking water, the site shall create a Operate, Inspection and Maintenace program for said system(s) 5) If this section applies to the site, they shall establish a Sampling, Analysis and Monitoring Plan to meet either local Regulatory Requirements or WHO GDWQ READ SECTION FOR ALL REQUIREMENTS 12 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. Slide 13
WASTEWATER & WASTEWATER CHARATERIZATION (ALL SITES) - If site has a "NO Discharge" Wastewater Certificate - Should perform a baseline wastewater characterization to document that the site meets regulatory discharge requirements - For New process and/or a Change to an existing processes, sites shall follow Change Management and perform a Risk Assessment - Obtain Wastewater Discharge Permit (when applicable) - If site has wastewater discharge that does not meet "no Discharge" requirements, site shall have a permit and/or procedure that documents: - Pollutant discharge limits - Process for identifying new sources of wastewater - Sampling, Analysis and Monitoring plan (i.e., testing requirements, etc.) 13 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020. All Rights Reserved.
Slide 14
WASTEWATER PRETREATMENT & TREATMENT OPERATIONAL CONTROL AND INSPECTION (IF APPLICABLE) - If the site treats or pretreats wastewater, this section applies to you. - Create an Operational Control, Inspection and Maintenace procedure (based on manufacturer recommendations) - Discharge and treatment piping instrumentation diagram (system and infrastructure that connects) - Recommended to included drinking water ( i.e. portable) and process water operations and maintenance activities in this procedure 14 BUSINESS CONFIDENTIAL | ©Jabil Inc. 2020.
