Water is Finite Lesson 3 Mr.Jack
IN Finite = LIMITED
About 75% of Earth is covered in water A lot of this water is either unavailable to us or undrinkable. Why? Only 3 percent of the water on Earth is freshwater! But still some of this water is unavailable to us… It’s frozen! ~ 2% It’s polluted! Groundwater- hard to get to In the atmosphere (clouds) Only about 1% of the water on our planet can be used by us for drinking.
Water Wonders Activity What are some different places water can go as it moves through and around Earth? We are going to become water drops and move through the world like water does! Cloud, Stream, Ocean, Plant , Animal, Ice (Glacier)
Reservoirs! Only about 1% of the water on our planet can be used by us for drinking . Where does our drinking water come from and how does it get there?

Lopez Lake Sued! The Fish Need More Water!
Who uses water?
Ways to conserve and protect for all… Better irrigation for big farms Eat local, seasonally when possible, Grow food right for their local weather Eat less meat products Shorter showers install low-flow bathroom fixtures in shower and toilet, Turn off the sink when you aren’t using it P lant native plants instead of a grass & Many others! Agriculture (60%) Household (10%) Factories need water to make goods like clothes. Everything we use everyday requires water to make, Energy efficient machinery Reduce, reuse, recycle Industry (20%) Animals and plants need water Insects like bees need pollen from flowers, fish need it to live in, frogs and birds… even fungi & bacteria need water Environment (10%)
What would happen if… Places like these didn’t have clean water? All Living things need water!
Water Use Direct vs. Indirect
713 GALLONS! 2,000 GALLONS!!!
45 GALLONS! 3+ GALLONS!
3,400 GALLONS! 2,100 GALLONS!
39,000 GALLONS
660 GALLONS! 450 GALLONS!
Ways we can conserve water
The Big Ideas The water on Earth is the only water that has been and will ever be on Earth! Unequal use of water (agriculture, household, industry, environment) Dams can be harmful to wildlife Everything you own uses water even if you can’t see it with your eyes (clothes, cars, candy) We have a finite amount of fresh water we can use so we need to learn to share!
