Ways of Separating Components of Mixtures Prepared by: RUTH MANANGAN ALMARIO Inhobol Elementary School Masinloc District
1. Filtration - is a technique in which an insoluble solid is separated from a liquid. - it uses a filter like mesh cloth or a filter paper to separate solid components from a liquid.
Filtration
2. Evaporation Is a technique used in separating a soluble solid from a liquid. This method is used also by people who produced salt by evaporating sea water under the sun.
Evaporation
3. Distillation Is a process of separating liquids from a solution. The separation technique is based on the differences of the boiling point of the substances in the mixture. It is where a mixture is heated.
3. Distillation The substance with the lowest boiling point boils into vapor and condenses to liquid. It is collected as distilled water. Is used in producing pure water, distilled water or ethanol. Most homogeneous solutions can be separated by distillation.
Distillation
4. Decantation Is a technique used in separating a less-dense substance from a denser one. Mixture is left undisturbed. When the components are separated, the less-dense substance could be removed by scooping using a spoon or it can be removed by slowly pouring out
4. Decantation the less-dense substance. - It is used in removing oil or gasoline from an oil spill Example : oil in water and fats that float in sinigang could be removed by decantation or scooping.
Decantation
5. Chromatography It is used in hospitals to detect the level of alcohol in the bloodstream. It is also used in environmental agencies to detect the level of pollutants in the water supply.
5. Chromatography A technique that separates the components of mixtures that are based on the ability of each component to be drawn across the surface of another material. It is good in separating dissolved substances that have different colors, such as ink and plant dyes.
Chromatography
6. Physical Manipulation Is a technique used in separating the solid components of a heterogeneous mixture. The components of the mixture should be big enough to be seen and picked up by hands or forceps.
Physical Manipulation
7. Use of Magnets It is good in separating metals from non-metals. Used of magnets is also utilized in industries, especially in junkyards. They remove metal scraps from other materials using a big magnet.
Use of Magnet
8. Sieving Involves using a strainer or a big screen to separate the components of solid mixtures. The strainer allows only the fine particles through it and prevents the larger ones. Mixtures with big and fine components can be separated by sieving.
Sieving
9. Winnowing The mixture is allowed to fall from a height. The lighter components get separated from the heavier ones because of the wind or air blows. This method is used to separate lighter husk from heavier grains like wheat.
Winnowing
