Learning Objectives At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:   define contemporary arts; differentiate contemporary vs. modern arts and their similarities; and enumerate the characteristics of contemporary arts

Contemporary - belonging to or occurring in the present - are people and things from the same time period.  Anything characteristic of the present day can be called contemporary.  

Art derived from, the latin word “ ars ” which originally meant “skills” or “craft”. -manifestation or use of the various creative disciplines or forms. -tangible output of creative expressions.  

Contemporary Art is the art that spring outs of the present-day events and passions of the society. It is the newest form of art, amusing people from the middle to late 20th century (70’s) up to this period. Less is more and it serves as form of expression of the people’s present feelings and longings.  

Modern Art -art produced between the American colonial period (1898-1940) to the Post-war period (1946-1969)

Contemporary vs. Modern Art

MODERN ART CONTEMPORARY ARTS Modern Art Came First - The advent of modern art, or ”modernist art”, is usually traced back roughly to the late 19th century. Contemporary art coincides with the emergence of  Pop Art  and  Postmodernism   Modern Art Was Mostly Abstract - incredibly diverse, and it is impossible to generalize, but one common trend was abstraction Modern Art Influenced Conceptual Art – Dadaism and Surrealism - Dadaism and Surrealism were less abstract than those mentioned above.

Pre-Colonial arts or Indigenous Art These are expressions integrated within the rituals which were based from the significant moments of the people’s lives in the community like ceremonies, planting, harvesting and among others. Canao in Cordillera Autonomous Region

Islamic Colonial (13 th century up to the present) -artist were influence by the doctrine of Tawhid or Unity of God. It emphasizes the greatness of divine being.. Through the abstract forms of patterns in the interior of the mosques, the believer can concentrate mentally, thus divine unity is achieved.

Spanish Colonial ( 1521-1898 ) Most of the art forms during this era were religious art for the purpose of converting the Filipinos to Catholicism. Church were a combination of both native and European elements that is why art historians referees the style as colonial baroque or Philippine Baroque.

Inside the churches were images of saints made out of woods or ivory. They are displayed in decorative altars called the retablo. They also introduced the pasyon or pabasa which is biblical narration of Christ’s passion in an improvised melody.

American Colonial Period (1898-1940) to the Postwar Republic (1946-1969 ) American introduce the Vaudeville that originated from France and became popular in the Philippines and was locally called bodabil ., a collection of slapstick, songs, dances, acrobatics, comedy skits, chorus girls, magic acts and standup comic acts.  

Japanese Occupation (1941-1945 led the propaganda movement that would reject the Western traditions Art production was under the scrutiny of the Japanese government Expression which was subversive by nature or anti-Japanese would tantamount to torture and even death.  

70s to Contemporary -period of the 70s and 80s, art form was a protest art that exposed the socio-political issues and struggles at this time. The focus was on the oppressed, marginalized and underrepresented people who experience inequality and forms of depression. -art was not only expressed through painting but also posters and murals in the streets  

Various Contemporary Art Forms

use any medium to represent the artist idea,emotions and imaginations. Examples are painting, sculpture, archritecture , ceramics, drawing, printmaking, design, video, fil making and photography. Visual A rts

Practical Art- for practical iuse or utility. It is the changing of raw materials for utilitarian purposes. Abstract Art - originates from unnatural objects, such as geometric patterns, shapes, and formats. known as nonobjective art or concrete art that usually embraces non-representational work.

Figurative Art describes modern art that genuinely depicts the real-world issue by using the human figure. This art type's ultimate goal is to provide a realistic representation of life by using illusionary characteristics

Minimalist Art- main idea behind using this type of art is used to depict reality without any imitation.. Minimalist artwork depicts a highly purified form of beauty, simplicity, truth, and harmony

three-dimensional art made by four basic processes: carving, modeling, casting, and constructing Sculpture Art

is one of the most famous artistic developments that emerged in reaction to commercial cultures, mass media, and consumerism. In this type of artwork, artists use commonplace objects, newspapers, comic strips, bottle cans, road signs, and other popular commercial world items to convey their message. Pop Art  

is a contemporary art style that uses existing and modern typefaces to arrange text and appropriately convey the message—basically, typeface design letters of alphabets that express specific techniques, feelings, and brand identity. Typography art is one of the most important aspects of the contemporary art design used in the print and web design industry. Typography
