RATIO AND PROPORTION

OBJECTIVES 1. Define ratio and proportion and explain how it used in business,

The ratio of triangles to squares Ratio can be expressed in four ways and can be written as: RATIO A ratio can be defined as the relationship or comparison between two numbers of the same unit to check how bigger is one number than the other one . 2 to 3 (phrase form) 2 ÷3 (division form) 2:3 (colon form) (fraction form)

1. 1 hour to 40 minutes 2. 2 weeks to 4 days Example Express the following ratios in simplest form 3. Eight out of 30 passengers are tourists. Find the ratio of the tourists to the other passengers. 4. Mark has 42 marbles. Fourteen marbles are red while the rest are green. What is the ratio of the red marbles to the green marbles 5. In a certain room, there are 28 women and 21 men. a. What is the ratio of men to women? b. What is the ratio of women to the total number of people?

Allocation of a number according to ratio To allocate or divide a number into parts according to ratio, consider the following steps: . 1. Add the terms of the ratio. 2. Write the tterms as the numerator with their sum as thedenominator. 3. Multiply the fraction to the whole to get the part. EXAMPLE RATIO Suppose that ₱5, 400,000 is to be allocated to the three departments: sales, marketing, and advertising in the ratio of 1:2:3. How much money will be allocated for each department? Given: Whole = ₱5, 400,000, Ratio = 1:2:3 3.) x 5,400,000 = ₱900,000 sales x 5,400,000 = ₱1, 800,000 marketing x 5,400,000 = ₱2, 700,000 advertising   2.) , or or   1.) 1 + 2 + 3 = 6

The bakery needs to equally distribute 7,847 cupcakes to 7 stores. How many cupcakes will each store receive? Andrew Lopez bought a house and a lot that was advertised as follows: Land_______________________₱3, 000,000 House_______________________ 4,000,000 Furnitures____________________-2,300,000 Appliances _____________________950,000 Total________________________₱10,250,000 EXAMPLE Andrew was able to buy the property at ₱9, 225,000. For record purposes, the buyer wanted to allocate the ₱9, 225,000 to be various components in the same ratio as the components were advertized. Find the cost allocation for each component. Land_______________________ 0.9 x ₱3, 000,000 = ₱2, 700,000 House______________________ 0.9 x 4,000,000 = ₱3, 600,000 Furnitures___________________ 0.9 x 2,300,000 = ₱2, 070, 000 Appliances __________________ 0.9 x 950,000 = ₱ 855,000 Total_________________________________________₱9,255,000 Allocation:

A proportion is an equation that shows two ratios are equal It can be written as a : b = c : d or = , where b ≠ 0, d ≠ 0   2 : 3 = 4 : 6 =12 PROPORTION 2 : 3 = 4 : 6 means extremes =     cross multiplication The product of the extremes is equal to the product of the means, ad=bc.

I f two can be simplified into the same ratio, then the two ratios a proportion. PROPORTION 4 : 6 9 : 12 8 : 12 10 : 25

Identify the means and extremes of a given pair of ratios and tell whether if form a proportion or not. Let’s try Ratios Means Extremes Proportion or Not 1.) 4 : 5 , 24 : 30 2.) 5 : 6 , 20 : 24 3.) 2 : 7 , 20 : 56 4.) 4 : 10 , 28 : 70 5.) 5 : 12 , 15 : 36 6.) , 7.) , 8.) , Ratios Means Extremes Proportion or Not 1.) 4 : 5 , 24 : 30 2.) 5 : 6 , 20 : 24 3.) 2 : 7 , 20 : 56 4.) 4 : 10 , 28 : 70 5.) 5 : 12 , 15 : 36
