ELEMENTS OF ARTS

Elements of art: Visual Art appreciation 2 Define as building of blocks of matter or ingredients of art.

line Line refers to a point of moving at an identifiable path, it has length and direction. It also had width. It is one dimensional. It has variations in view of orientation/direction, shape and thickness. Art appreciation 3

5 kinds of line Art appreciation 4 Horizontal Line Lines that run parallel to the ground. Vertical Line Diagonal Line Curved Line Lines that move up and down. Lines that slant. Lines that are made by combining diagonal lines that change direction Lines that change direction gradually. Zigzag Line

It has always two dimensions, length as well as width. It is represented as an enclosed area that is defined by color, value, space, texture and form. When lines form together, they make flat shapes. Art appreciation 5 shape

Categories of shape Art appreciation 6 Geometric Shapes Also called as regular shapes. These are shapes that are easy to recognize and is use in math information also. Organic Shapes Also called as freeform shapes These are shapes that seem to follow no rules. Figures that have a natural look and a flowing, curving appearance.

Categories of shape Art appreciation 7 Positive Shapes It is the solid forms in a design Occupy positive space. Negative Shapes It is the space around the positive shape. (The positive space is masked by black.) (The negative space is masked by black.)

Categories of shape Art appreciation 8 Static Shapes It appears stable and resting. Dynamic Shapes It is the space around the positive shape.

Has always three dimensions; length, width and height. Art appreciation 9 form

Types of form Art appreciation 10 Cubes A regular solid of six equal square sides. Cylinder A surface traced by a straight line moving parallel to a fixed straight line and intersecting a fixed planar closed curve.

Types of form Art appreciation 11 Cones A solid generated by rotating a right triangle about one of its legs. Sphere A round solid figure, or its surface, with every point on its surface equidistant from its center.

space It is the creation of visual perspective; this gives the illusion of depth. It can also mean the way an artist uses the area within the picture plane. Real space is actually three-dimensional. Art appreciation 12

2 dimensional artwork Art appreciation 13 Positive and Negative Space Usually identifies with the white space is the negative space. The positive space, is the spaces where shadow is heavily used. Three-Dimensional Space Can be simulated through a variety of techniques such as shading. An illusion of three-dimensionality can be achieved in a two-dimensional work.

color Consists of Hue (another word for color), Intensity (brightness) and Value (lightness or darkness) Has three characteristics, which are hue, value and intensity. Intensity refers to the brightness or dullness of the work of art. Art appreciation 14

Categories of color Art appreciation 15 Hue This dimension of color gives its name. It can be subdivided into: Primary Colors – red, yellow, blue Secondary Colors – green, orange, violet Tertiary Colors – six in total, the hues are achieved when primary and secondary colors are mixed. Value Refers to the brightness or darkness of color. Light Colors – taken as the source of light in the composition. Dark Colors – the lack or even absence of light.

Categories of color Art appreciation 16 Intensity This is the colors brightness or dullness. Bright or Warm Colors – positive energy Dull or Cool Colors – sedate/soothing, seriousness or calm

Categories of value Art appreciation 17 Tint Adding white to color paint to create lighter values such as light blue or pink. Shade Adding black to paint to create dark values such as dark blue or dark red.

Categories of value Art appreciation 18 High-Key Where the picture is all light values. Low-Key Where the picture is all dark values.

Categories of value Art appreciation 19 Value Contrast Where light values are placed next to dark values to create contrast or strong differences. Value Scale A scale that shows the gradual change in value from its lightest value, white to its darkest value black.

The quality of a surface or the way any work of art is represented. Also refers to the way a picture is made to look rough or smooth. Art appreciation 20 texture

Categories of texture Art appreciation 21 Texture in 2 Dimensional Implied using one technique or a combination of other elements of art. Surface Texture Refers to the textures of the three-dimensional art object.

Picture plane is the actual surface of the painting or drawing, where no illusion of a third dimension exists. Aside from this technique, linear pers Art appreciation 22 Planes and perspective

3 TYPES OF PERSPECTIVE Art appreciation 23 One-Point Perspective Often used in depicting roads, tracks, hallways or row tress. This Type of perspective shows perspective shows parallel lines that seem to converge at a specific and lone vanishing point, along the horizon line. Two-Point Perspective Pertains to a painting or drawing that makes use of two vanishing points, which can be placed anywhere along the horizon line. If often used in depicting structures such as houses or building in the landscape that are viewed from a specific corner. Three-Point Perspective In this kind of perspective, the viewer is looking at a scene from above or below.

Elements of art: auditory Art appreciation 24 Together with literature, music as an art form is classified as auditory art.

Elements of music Art appreciation 25 Rhythm Associated to the terms beat, meter. Rhythm is the element of music that situates it in time. Beat is the basic unit of music Tempo refers to speed (beats/second). Beats can be organized into a recognizable recurrent pattern, which called the meter. Largo – slowly and broadly Adante – walking pace Moderato – at moderate speed Allegro – fast Vivace – lively Accelerando – gradually speeding up Rallentado – gradually slowing down Allargando – getting slower, broadening Rubato – literally “robbed time,” rhythm is played freely for expressive effect.

Elements of music Art appreciation 26 Dynamics The element of music that refers to the loudness or quietness of music is dynamics. Classical terms are used to refer to the different levels pertaining to this: Planissimo – (pp) – very quiet Piano (p) – quiet Mezzo-piano ( mp ) – moderately quiet Mezzo-forte (mf) – moderately loud Forte (f) – loud Fortissimo (ff) – very loud

Elements of music Art appreciation 27 Melody Melody refers to the linear presentation (horizontal) of pitch. By horizontal, it means that in musical notation, it is read in succession from left to right. Pitch is the highest or lowness of musical sound. Harmony If melody is horizontal, harmony is vertical . It arises when pitches are combined to form chords. When several notes are simultaneously played, this refers to a chord . Harmony can be described in terms of its “harshness”: dissonance is the harsh-sounding combination while consonance is the smooth-sounding combination

Elements of music Art appreciation 28 Timbre Timbre is often likened to the color of music. It is quality that distinguishes a voice or an instrument from another. Dependent on the technique, the timbre may give a certain tone or characteristic to music, much like how a painter evokes different effects or impressions onto the canvas. Texture The number of melodies, the type of layers: and their relatedness in a composition is the texture of music. It may be; Monophonic – single melodic line Polyphonic – two or more melodic lines Homophonic – main melody accompanied by chords.

PRINCIPLES OF ARTS

balance Art appreciation 30 Symmetrical This refers to the distribution of the visual elements in view of their placement in relation to each other. 3 forms of balance The elements used on the one sides are reflected to the other. This offers the most stable visual sense to any other work.

Art appreciation 31 Asymmetrical The elements are not the same (of the weight) on each other side, putting the heaviness on one side. Radial There is a central point in the composition, around which elements and objects are distributed.

Scale and proportion Art appreciation 32 Scale pertains to the size in relation to what is normal for the figure or object in question. Sculptures of exaggerated are common all over the world. Proportion , is the size of the components or of objects in relation to one another when taken as a composition of art.

Scale and proportion Art appreciation 33

Scale and proportion Art appreciation 34 Natural Leonardo da Vinci’s “Vitruvian Man” is an exploration on the ideas of the Roman architect Vitruvius which the human body is an example of classical proportion. Man’s body can be used to better understand the symmetry that exists in nature and the universe. Proportion can be: Relates to the realistic size of the visual elements in the artwork especially for figurative artworks.

Art appreciation 35 Exaggerated Refer to unusual size relation of visual elements exaggerating the immensity or minutes of an object. Idealized Most common to those that follow canons of perfection, the size-relations of elements or objects, which achieve the most ideal size-relations.

Emphasis AND CONTRAST Art appreciation 36 Emphasis allows the attention of the viewer to a focal point(s), accentuating or drawing the attention to these elements or objects. emphasis contrast Contrast is the display between the elements that figure into the composition.

Unity and variety Art appreciation 37 Intended to be otherwise, compositions are intended to imbue a sense of accord or completeness from the artwork. unity variety It is the principle that aims to retain the interest by allowing patches or areas that both excite and allow the eye to rest.

harmony Art appreciation 38 Unity and Variety is related to the principle of Harmony, in which the elements or objects achieve a sense of flow and interconnectedness.

movement Art appreciation 39 Refers to the direction of the viewing eye as it goes through the artwork, guided by areas or elements that are emphasized. These focal points can be lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art, among others.

rhythm Art appreciation 40 This is created when an element is repeated, creating implied movement. Variety of repetition helps invigorate rhythm as depicted in the artwork.

Repetition and pattern Art appreciation 41 Lines, shapes, colors and other elements may appear in an artwork in a recurring manner. This is called repetition . In addition, the image created out of repetition is called pattern . With repetition, there is sense of predictability that is conveyed, which in turn imbues the feelings of security and calmness.

Combined or hybrid art Art appreciation 42 Refers to events that combine a variety of media or materials which can be both seen and heard and which exist in both space and time. Includes dance, poetry, cinema performances and etc. combined hybrid Contemporary art movement that incorporates scientific and technological advancements into art.

LET’S WRAP IT! Art appreciation 43 The Elements and Principle of Arts are essential to any artwork. These will help create a bridge in a person who may not normally find pleasure in looking art, may consider future engagements with it. In short, familiarity of the elements and principles has the potential to break the barriers in which art becomes ineffable.

THAT IS ALL FOR TODAY THANK YOU!
