INTRODUCTION Several styles in painting came out such as expressionism. Artist use these styles to show their fear to show horror and to show protest against brutality, darkness, and inhumanity of all forms.
LESSON OBJECTIVES identify representative artists and Filipino counterpart from the various art movements, value the role and function of artworks by evaluating their utilization and combination of art elements and principles; and creates artworks to derive the traditions/history of Expressionism
What enters your mind when you hear the word expressionism? Briefly explain your answer.
EXPRESSIONISM • Is an art movement originated in Germany in the 1910’s and ending in 1930’s pre-world war 2. • The movement was a response to the ever industrializing world and the loss of touch with humanity, authenticity and spirituality. • Expressionism ideals focused on portraying a mood, a feeling of a thought more than producing a scene from life. • A transition from still life drawing sparked the catalyst for a more abstract style. • The key elements are colors representing emotion, large brush and loose swirling and curving strokes.
TWO KNOWN INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS IN EXPRESSIONISM Vincent Willem van Gogh In just over a decade he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They includes landscapes, still lifes, portraits and self-portraits, and j are characterised by bold colors and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art.
Edvard Munch (12 December 18863-23 January 1944) was a Norwegian painter, whose best known work, The scream, has become one of the most iconic images of world art. His childhood was overshadowed by illness, bereavement and the dread of inheriting a mental condition that ran in the family.
The Three known Filipino Expressionism Artists Benedicto Reyes Cabrera as he is more popularly known is widely hailed as a master of contemporary Philippine art He was born in Manila on April 10, 1942. Bencab began carving a niche for himself in Manila’s art circles shortly after receiving his bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines in 1963
Jose Joya was a Filipino painter best known for his Abstract Expressionist works which utilized a variety of techniques, including controlled drips, impasto strokes, and transparent layering. He has an irresistible urge to reach that level of spiritual satisfaction and to project what he is and what he thinks through his work.
Alfonso Angel Yangco Ossorio was a Filipino American abstract expressionist artist who can born in Manila in 1916 to wealthy Filipino parents from the province of Negros Occidental . His heritage was Hispanic, Filipino, and Chinese. Between the ages of eight and thirteen, he attended school in England.
Modern Artist: Their Life and Artwork OSCAR- CLAUDE MONET (November 14, 1840- December 5, 1926) One of the founders of the Impressionist movement along with his friends Auguste Renior, Alfred Sisley and Frederick Bazil. He was the most prominent of the group Considered as the most influential figure in the movement Best known for his landscape paintings, particularly those depicting his beloved flower gardens and water lily ponds at his home in Giverny.
