Hospital Introduction-Induction

1. WELCOME

2. HOUSEKEEPING
•The ladies’ toilets are located on the 1st floor,
COMET, opposite the library.
•The gentlemen’s toilets are located on the
ground floor, COMET, opposite reception.
•Fire exits are located through the Sun Lounge
and via the Main COMET entrance into the
corridor.
•The Fire Assembly point is outside the
Paediatric Outpatients Department. (service
road between Medical & Surgical blocks.

4. USEFUL INFORMATION
•Medical Education offices open 08.00 –17.00 –
with some restrictions.
•All post delivered daily and sorted into pigeon
holes –alphabetically (located in the reception
area).
•Payslips kept in ground floor office –payday is
27
th
of each month -payslips are only kept for one
month –they are then returned to Payroll.
•If your usual contact within Medical Education is
not available, please discuss with another
member of the team.

5. How to log into hospital Intranet
First time to log on must be via a hospital
computer which has been logged out by the
previous user :
•Username –usually initial and surname
•Password –luton1234
•You will be asked to change password on the
first occasion you log in
•Once password changed you can access
emails via the Web Email icon or from home –
information in packs

7. The COMET LIBRARY
•Located 1st Floor, COMET
•Free WiFi and access to unblocked PCs
•Athens access to electronic resources including
•BMJ Best Practice and Case Reports
•UpToDate
•Mobile Apps such as Read by QXMD, Best Practice and BNF
•Clinical Skills.net
•Medline, Embase and PsycINFO (including available full-text)
•Up to 8 free Oxford Handbooks and Textbooks (Mobile App
Versions) per year
•Literature Searching, Free Book and Journal Interlibrary Loans,
Scanning and Printing, 3 Day Lendable iPads and Laptops, Phone
Chargers
•Regular Training on Literature Searching, Evidence Based Resources
and Critical Appraisal
•Staffed 08.00 –18:30 Monday -Friday.
•Library and IT suite open 24/7

8. MANDATORY JUNIOR DOCTORS
ON-LINE INDUCTION
•Introduced on-line induction in 2008
•Required to complete all modules within 6
weeks of start date
•Completion is monitored and exception
reports sent to Supervisors/Tutors and notified
to Trust Board

9. MANDATORY JUNIOR DOCTORS
ON-LINE INDUCTION
•You will have already received usernames, passwords
and modules for completion –if not received we will notify
you of these as soon as possible.
•Gillian Oduro, ext. 2133, is your contact if you haven’t
received your e-learning logins within the first 3 days.
•Should you require any assistance once you have
received your e-learning login details please email
[email protected] call ext. 8014 or 2505
•You can apply for one day of Study leave to complete the
modules –this will be monitored.
•Completion of all modules linked to the approval and
funding of study leave.
•5 free GrandRound lunchesfor all who complete
modules within 6-weeks of notification of passwords.

10. HOSPITAL GRAND ROUNDS
•Tuesday, 12.30pm –13.30pm.
•John Pickles Lecture Theatre, Ground Floor,
COMET.
•Presentations from senior Medical & Dental staff.
•Hot lunch available -£3.

11. EDUCATIONAL SUPERVISORS
•All trainees are allocated an Educational
Supervisor.
•If contact details are not in your pack you will
be notified of this within the next few days.
•Please arrange to meet with your Educational
Supervisors within the first two-weeks.

12. SMART CARDS/NCRS CARDS
•We are currently only using smartcards in
certain areas at the Trust.
•Doctors on GP placements will require a
smartcard.
•The Trust is in the process of implementing –
a new system to replace IPM and other
patient information systems –smartcards will
be needed for this once it goes live.
•We will therefore be issuing smartcards to
those that do not currently have one.

13. SMART CARDS/NCRS CARDS
•Newly qualified trainees or anyone who has
not been previously issued with a smart card
will be required to visit the Workforce
Information Office (HR) to collect their card.
•Please email [email protected]
arrange suitable time.
•Trainees already issued with smartcards will
have their existing cards updated remotely
and do not need to do anything.

14. ID PASSES
•ID passes to be collected from COMET today
•Passes MUST be worn at all times to enable
access to wards, departments and
accommodation
•Please note passes must be given back to
Security when you leave the Trust

15. CAR PARKING
•Very limited!
•Two non-resident staff car parks –Breast Screening &
Farringdon
•£1.20 per day
•Parking permits requested –completed forms have
been passed to Security and this information will be
linked to your ID Pass.
•When you receive your ID Pass you will need to load
funding onto your card to cover parking costs.
Machines situated just outside main entrance, at entry
to St. Marys car park and by the Boiler House car park.
•Machines take cash and cards
•Need ID pass to enter and exit car parks

16. SENIOR HOME CAR PARKING
•Those residing in Senior Home will need to
go to Security -with proof of residence -to
enable your card to be updated
•Your ID will then be linked to that car park
and will allow you free access
•You will be given an Orange Parking permit

17. DOCTORS MESS
•£10 per month
•Free WIFI access
•To join, complete form when you “sign-on” with
Medical Workforce representative
