What are the ICD-10 Codes for Osteomalacia?
Osteomalacia or bone softening is a disorder that weakens the bones. It is caused by
reduced mineralization, which results in bone breaking down faster than it can re-
form. Lack of vitamin D is the most common cause of osteomalacia. The condition is
seen in adults and can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb vitamins. If left
untreated, osteomalacia can cause broken bones and severe deformity.
Rheumatologists who diagnose and treat osteomalacia and other bone diseases must
code and bill appropriately for their services. Relying on a professional medical
billing company is the best way for practices to submit accurate claims.
Symptoms and Diagnosis
Bone fracture/pain and muscle weakness are the most common symptoms of
osteomalacia. Other symptoms include –
• Dull, aching pain in the legs, lower back, pelvis, and ribs
• Bones that can be sensitive to slight knocks
• Pseudo fractures of weight-bearing bones, such as the feet and pelvis
• Weak, sore, and stiff muscles (especially in the trunk, shoulders, buttocks, and
upper legs)
In addition to the history and physical, there are various tests that can be performed to
diagnose osteomalacia, such as a Vitamin D test, x-rays, and bone mineral density
scan. In some cases, diagnosis can take 2-3 years. In rare cases, a bone biopsy may
also be performed. Patients are prescribed Vitamin D, calcium, or phosphate
supplements and advised to get adequate exposure to sunlight. Other treatments
include wearing braces to reduce or prevent bone irregularities, and surgery to correct
severe bone deformities.
ICD-10 Codes for Osteomalacia
• M83 Adult osteomalacia
• M83.0 Puerperal osteomalacia
• M83.1 Senile osteomalacia
• M83.2 Adult osteomalacia due to malabsorption
• M83.3 Adult osteomalacia due to malnutrition
• M83.4 Aluminium bone disease
• M83.5 Other drug-induced osteomalacia in adults
• M83.8 Other adult osteomalacia
• M83.9 Adult osteomalacia, unspecified
Rheumatology billing and coding have specific challenges. Partnering with an
experienced medical billing company can help practices ensure accurate claims
submission and maximize reimbursement.
