WHAT IS A VARIABLE ? By: Marivette Joy M. Benedicto, TII-Guidance Designate PR2
Review Practical Research 2: Choosing your topics and titles 2
Each person/thing we collect data on is called an observation. In our research work, these are usually people/subjects. Observation (participants) possess a variety of characteristics. Introduction A discussion on variables in research 3
If a characteristic of an observation (participant) is the same for every member of the group i.e. it does not vary, it is called a constant If a characteristic of an observation (participant) differs for group members it is called a variable . Introduction A discussion on variables in research 4
WHAT IS A VARIABLE? Variables in Research Add a footer 5 A variable is a concept or abstract idea that can be described in measurable terms. In research, this term refers to the measurable characteristics, qualities, traits, or attributes of a particular individual, object, or situation being studied.
WHAT IS A VARIABLE? Variables in Research Add a footer 6 Anything that can vary can be considered a variable. For instance, age can be considered a variable because age can take different values for different people or for the same person at different times. Similarly , income can be considered a variable because a person's income can be assigned a value .
Variables in research Variables are properties or characteristics of some event, object, or person that can take on different values or amounts. 7
Variables in research A variable is not only something that we measure, but also something that we can manipulate and something we can control for. 8
Comparison Independent variables versus dependent variables Independent Variable are variables which are manipulated or controlled or changed. It is what the researcher studies to see its relationship or effects . Presumed or possible cause Dependent Variable are the outcome variables and are the variables for which we calculate statistics. This is the variable which changes on account of independent variable. It is influenced or affected by the independent variable Presumed results(Effect) 9

17 What Have You Learned? Instructions: State if the statements are true and false . Each person/thing we collect data on is called an observation . Observation (participants) possess a variety of characteristics. A variable is a concept or abstract idea that can be described in measurable terms. A variable refers to characteristics , qualities or attributes of a particular individual, object , or phenomena. 5. Age or income can be variables because these can take same values for same people or for the same values at different times.
18 What Have You Learned? Each person/thing we collect data on is called an observation . TRUE Observation (participants) possess a variety of characteristics . TRUE A variable is a concept or abstract idea that can be described in measurable terms. TRUE A variable refers to characteristics , qualities or attributes of a particular individual, object , or phenomena. TRUE 5. Age or income can be variables because these can take same values for same people or for the same values at different times. FALSE
19 ASSIGNMENT: 1) Review your research titles as a group. 2) Discuss with your members what would be the independent variable/s and the dependent variable/s of your study. 3) Write your answers in one (1) whole sheet of paper. 4) Share it in class.
