Definition: NPPA is an organisation of the government of India to fix/revise the prices of controlled bulk drugs and formulations and to enforce prices and availability of the medicines in the country, under the drugs(price control) order,1995. It was formed on august 29, 1997. It has been implemented and enforcing the drugs prices control order(DPCO), 1995/2013. The latest DPCO has a list of 384 drugs. Objective: To achieve the adequate production. To regulate equal distribution. To maintain an increase supply of bulk drug and formulations. To make these available at fare prices. 2

Function: To implement and enforce the provision of the drug price control order. To deal with all legal matter arising out of the decision of authority. To monitor availability of drug and in case of any shortage take remedial action. Collection and maintenance of data regarding import and export of drugs, market share of pharmaceutical companies and their profit. To advise government of India on the matter of drug policy and pricing. As per the rules and procedure laid down by the government, it requests or appoints the officer and other staff members of the authority. To renders advice to control central government on changes or revision in the drug policy. To render assistance to the central government in the parliamentary matters relating to the drug policy. 4
