What is PCRF?

PCRF stands for Policy and Charging Rules Function A dedicated policy equipment standardized in 3GPP ( 3rd Generation Partnership Project). E nables policy function for charging and bandwidth on the multimedia networks. It’s a new term introduced alongside the publishing of 3GPP policy charging control (PCC) architecture. A lso referred as Policy Decision Function (PDF) or Policy Server.

The PCRF Architecture a. Policy Servers- to provide the policy and charging management function b. Subscriber Profile Repositories (SPR) c. Configuration Central Management System (CMS)– to centralize the provisioning and management of policy servers

Functioning of PCRF In Service Provider Information Technology (SPIT) PCRF interfaces with the main packet gateway and takes charging decision for unique requirements. Organizations that offer PCRF functionality include the major equipment vendors : a. Alcatel-Lucent b. HP Inc . c. Nokia Network d. Ericsson AB

Benefits of PCRF 1. High performance and reliability 3. Flexible policy control 4. Pre-integrated solution with b illing and charging system 2. Reduced time-to-market

Summary PCRF- also referred to as policy server or - formerly - a Policy Decision Function (PDF) enables service providers and operators with: Highest level of flexibility required to innovate in the next generation data services. More flexibility to optimize, monetize and personalize the mobile data usage.
