History of Aerobics
You must be remembering that era of 70s and 80s was of Disco, which was rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. With this, in the early 70s was introduced Aerobic Dance. The instructor Jacki Sorensen used to dance to the popular tunes while leading the group of individuals for exercise. Coming from the dance background, Sorensen then started training aerobic dance to a group of military wives in Puerto Rico, where she was based with her family. She later expanded this type of dance programs to YMCA in the U.S.
History of Zumba fitness
Whereas, Zumba which is also a form of an aerobic dance began in the 1990s when a Columbian dancer cum fitness instructor forgot his aerobic exercise music tapes that lead him to improvise with his dance music for the fitness class. This class was an instant hit which made him later expand his idea and classes to the U.S. This Columbian dancer cum fitness instructor is none other than Beto Perez.
Choreography in Aerobics and Zumba
Traditionally, the aerobic dance form would consist of movements like box steps, line movements, whereas some also include a part of belly dancing, hip-hop dance movements. These movements are choreographed in sync with the music that includes mostly techno, disco, big band or even bollywood . Often people are seen to be working out with steppers during the aerobics, known as stepper aerobics.
Zumba is choreographed with several Latin American dance styles such as Salsa, Reggaeton , Cumbia , Meringue, ChaChaCha , Bachata , Tango and even Bhangra . It is this variety of dancing forms that make that ultimate workout session a complete fun dance party.
Scientifically, it is Zumba that has proven to effectively lose maximum calories around 800-1000 for a session of an hour, if considered on regular basis. Whereas, this value can be sustain up to 500-800 in case of Aerobics.
The only breaking point in the choreography of both is in aerobic moves, the movements change at irregular intervals, letting your instructor break the rhythm, while you are just catching the moves. This creates lack of concentration. When in Zumba, the dance steps are such easy and simple that even a twelve year old can match it with a sixty year old. So, people basically enjoy Zumba much more for its fun workout and uninterrupted dancing movements.
