Wh - questions By: Marjie Bay- asen

how to formulate WH-questions and how to respond to it.

WHEN DO WE USE THESE WH QUESTIONS. These questions are used when gathering information. Wh Questions , also known as “ open questions”, are question words that begin with “ Wh ” (except for “how”). There are six Wh questions in English. These are   who ,  what ,  when ,  where ,  why ,  and  how.

how do we form WH-questions? We usually form wh -questions with wh - + an auxiliary verb + subject + main verb.

Auxiliary verbs Auxiliary verbs or helping verbs are used together with the main verb to show the verbs tense or to form a question, auxiliary verbs are:

Example of sentence that has an auxiliary verb We have been doing our best. auxiliary verb Main verb

WHO Person When you want information about a person . Who puts out the fire? (firefighter) Who drives the bus? (driver) Who do we go see when we’re sick? (doctor) Who teaches kids at school? (teacher)

what Object, idea or action What  is used to request information about somebody or something . EXAMPLES; What cuts fruits? (knife) What do you use to buy things? (money)

WHERE Place-Use information when you want Information about a place. EXAMPLES: Where would you like to go? Where would you like to eat?

WHEN Time is used to obtain information about the time period in which an action occurs. EXAMPLES: When do we sleep? (at night ) When do we eat breakfast? (in the morning)

WHy Used to ask about  reasons/ causes. EXAMPLE: Why do you sleep early?

HOW Manner is used to obtain information about the way something happens, or the manner or way somebody behaves or does something . EXAMPLE: How much money do you have?

why is it important to ask questions? Q uestioning is important because it helps us to learn better. It is the simplest and most effective way of learning. People who think that they know it all no longer ask questions – why should they? Brilliant thinkers never stop asking questions because they know that this is the best way to gain deeper insights.

Group activity Instruction : Formulate a question using the WH questions basing from the topic that you will choose afterwards read your questions in front.
