Wide Area Network [WAN] Lesson 1 : 30 March 2024 [Grade 12] Networks

By the end of the lesson learners should be able to: Define a WAN and it's purpose. Describe key characteristics of WANs and give examples of a WAN Know the difference between WANs and other network types such as LANs and MANs.

What is Wide Area Network [WAN] ? A wide-area network (WAN) is a network that covers a large geographical area, such as a neighbourhood, a city, a country, or even the world. A WAN connects two or more LANs. A typical use of WANs in business is where different branches of a business are connected to share resources. This can be done through the use of satellites or telecommunication networks

What are the characteristics of a WAN how is it different from other Area networks ?

Large geographical area : WANs span large distances, connecting remote sites, offices, and entire countries. Multiple technologies :WANs use a variety of technologies to connect devices, such as leased lines, Frame Relay, and VPNs. High bandwidth : WANs are designed to handle high volumes of data, making them ideal for data-intensive applications like video streaming and cloud computing. Characteristics of a WAN

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a WAN?

Advantages WANs can connect devices over large distances, allowing users to communicate and access information from virtually anywhere. WANs can provide high-speed data transfer, making them ideal for applications like video streaming and online gaming. WANs can be easily expanded to accommodate more users and devices, making them suitable for businesses and organizations that need to grow . WANs can be more complex to design, implement, and manage than LANs, which can make them more expensive to maintain. Data can take longer to travel, leading to increased latency, which can affect real-time applications like voice and video conferencing. WANs can be vulnerable to cyber-attacks, which can result in data breaches and other security issues . Disadvantages

Think of the internet The internet is an example of a computer network consisting of billions of connected devices, allowing people to share information, obtain entertainment, or chat to one another.

The Internet is a global network of interconnected computer networks. Here's how it works: A device (computer, smartphone, etc.) connects to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider (ISP). This device gets a unique IP address that acts as its identifier on the Internet. The device can then access the Internet and communicate with other devices using a variety of protocols, such as TCP/IP. To find the destination of a message, each device on the Internet uses a network of routers to forward the message until it reaches its destination. HOW DOES THE INTERNET WORK?

Class activity

Instructions for the class activity: * You will be working in groups of 4-5, based on your seating in class. * Each group will have 10 minutes to discuss and find examples of Wide Area Networks (WANs) in everyday life. * When you've found examples, decide who will present your findings to the class. Each group will have 5 minutes to present. * Remember, examples of WANs can include the Internet, corporate networks, and mobile networks, among others.
